AKRON, Ohio- For the second time in as many games at the Ohio Collegiate Charity Classic in Akron, Ohio, an OSU pitcher tossed a no-hitter and the Buckeye offense provided enough firepower to shorten the game to five innings with a mercy ruling. Wendy Allen (So., Moreno Valley, Calif./Moreno Valley) threw five innings without giving up a hit and struck out 10 to lead OSU to an 8-0 win over Miami (Ohio). Allen walked a batter with one out in the fifth to give the RedHawks their only base runner of the game and end her bid for a perfect game.
Katie Chain (Jr., North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) stuck out nine Friday night in a no-hit effort over Wright State.
“We’re anxious for spring to get here,” Linda Kalafatis, OSU head coach, said. “To have two pitchers toss no-hitters and see the team hit the ball like they have is very encouraging.”
The Buckeyes totaled 12 hits to help shorten the game to a five-inning affair.
Allen collected two hits to help her effort, including a double. Her single led off the bottom half of the first inning. Anna Smith (Sr., Walnut, Calif./Diamond Bar) followed with a single. A single to center field by Chrissy Fowler (Sr., Utica, Ohio/Utica) brought in both runners. Fowler scored later in the inning on a bunt by Sarah West (Sr., Galloway, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson).
OSU added three runs in the second inning. Annie Dedic (Jr., Yorba Linda, Calif/Fullerton J.C.) singled and Allen doubled before Stacy Roth (Sr., Wauseon, Ohio/Wauseon) singled to score Dedic. Kristine Himes (Jr., Bolivar, Ohio/Tuscarawas Valley) doubled off the wall in left field to score both Allen and Roth. Dedic singled to center field in the bottom of the fifth inning to score Beth McAbier (Carrollton, Ohio/Carrollton) from second to end the game. McAbier had singled to right center field to open the final stanza. She was move to second on a single to center field by Amy Ellis (Jr., Erie, Pa../Ball State)
The Buckeyes game against Akron, originally scheduled for Friday at 6 p.m., has been rescheduled for 4 p.m. Sunday.
