COLUMBUS, Ohio–Through 12 innings of a doubleheader with the Ohio State softball team (29-12 overall, 3-3 Big Ten), Illinois managed just four hits. Down 3-0 entering the bottom of the sixth inning, the Illini scored four runs on three hits to win game two and gain a split of the first ever two meetings between the schools.
After the Illini had put one run on the board, second baseman Katie O’Connell hit a three-run home run to put Illinois in the lead. With the win, the Illini improve to 33-15.
Kristi DeVries took the loss for the Buckeyes. In 5.1 innings of work she allowed five hits, four earned runs and struck out five. Kathryn Nevard improved to 17-7 with the win for the Illini.
OSU took a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning. Wendy Allen (Fr., Moreno Valley, Calif./Moreno Valley) singled to left field to open the inning. DeVries then singled with a shot back to the pitcher. A double down the left field line by Kristine Himes (So., Bolivar, Ohio/Tuscarawas Valley) scored Allen. Jenn Elwell (Jr., Dearborn Heights, Mich./Divine Child), pinch running for DeVries, scored when Amy Ellis (So., Erie, Pa./Ball State) singled to right field. Himes scored from third when Ellis was caught stealing at second base.
Chrissy Fowler (Jr., Utica, Ohio/Utica) went 2-for-3 with a double off the wall in the seventh inning. The double did not spark an OSU rally, however.
OSU returns to action when it travels to Dayton, Ohio, to face Dayton in a doubleheader at 3 p.m. Monday, April 10.
