Softball Drops Illinois, 5-0, in First Meeting – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio–In its first ever meeting with Illinois, which fielded a softball team with scholarship players for the first time this season, the Ohio State softball team (29-11 overall, 3-2 Big Ten) defeated the Illini, 5-0, in game one of a doubleheader at Buckeye Field.
Katie Chain (Jr., North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) picked up the win to improve her record to 13-5. She struck out five and allowed just two hits in seven innings of work. Amanda Fortune took the loss for the Illini. She is 14-8 for the season.
Kristine Himes (So., Bolivar, Ohio/Tuscarawas Valley) went 3-for-3 from the plate with three runs batted in. OSU totaled nine hits.
The Buckeyes parlayed five hits in the second inning into three runs. Kristi DeVries (Fr., Corona, Calif./Corona) doubled to center field to open the inning. Himes then hit her fifth home run of the season, smacking the delivery into the pine trees behind the right center field fence to put OSU up 2-0. Amy Ellis (So., Erie, Pa./Ball State) singled to center field. Ellis advanced to second on a single to center field by Liz Kacsanek (So., Uniontown, Ohio/Green). Anna Smith (Jr., Walnut, Calif./Diamond Bar) scored Ellis with a single to right center.
OSU added two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Smith reached on an error by the shortstop and scored when DeVries singled. Himes then scored DeVries with a single to right field.
