Softball Sweeps Youngstown State Doubleheader with 9-1 win. – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio- The Ohio State softball team (38-13 overall, 10-4 in the Big Ten) edged closer to tying the school record for the most wins in a season with a 9-1 win over Youngstown State in game two of a doubleheader sweep of the Penguins. OSU now stands just two wins away of tying the record of 40, set by the 1994 edition of the Buckeyes.
Jenn Elwell (Jr., Dearborn Heights, Mich/Divine Child) earned her first win of the season for the Buckeyes, holding the Penguins to seven hits in six innings and striking out two.
“Jenn Elwell stepped up and gave us some good innings,” Linda Kalafatis, OSU head coach, said. “She settled down after a giving up a run and did a nice job for us. Jenn did something for this team that it needed. As we have gone on this season, that’s what we continue to see from people on this team. People step and give us something extra when we need it.”
YSU jumped out to a 1-0 win in the top of the first. Shortstop Lacey Reichert singled to right center field with on out. She scored when designated player Michelle Long doubled to right field.”
OSU tied the game at one in the bottom of the second. Kristine Himes (So., Bolivar, Ohio/Tuscarawas Valley) drew a walk to open the inning. Elwell pinch ran and advanced to third base on a throwing error to first base by pitcher Stephanie Hartmann. Elwell then scored on a double steal to tie the score.
The Buckeyes pulled away in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring five runs on six hits. Kari Crandell (Fr., Hendersonville, Tenn./Hendersonville) reached on a bunt to open the inning. Jenn Link (So., Yorba Linda, Calif./Sonora) put Amy Ellis (So., Erie, Pa.,/Ball State), pinch running for Crandell, on second. The runners moved up one base on a wild pitch. A single to let field by Chrissy Fowler (Jr., Utica, Ohio/Utica) scored Ellis. Sarah West (Jr., Galloway, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson doubled off the base of the right center wall to score Link. Kristine Himes followed with another double off the base of the wall in right center to score West. Breanna Pozzi (Fr., Petaluma, Calif./Petaluma) then singled up the middle to score Himes. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Annie Dedic (So., Yorba Linda, Calif./Fullerton J.C.) singled to right field to open the Buckeye half. Fowler doubled to right field, moving Dedic to third. Stacy Roth doubled to right field to bring in both Dedic and Fowler. Roth was moved to third on a single by West and scored on a wild pitch to end the game due to the mercy rule.
OSU will face another in-state opponent, Bowling Green, in a doubleheader Wednesday. Game one begins at 3 p.m.
