Softball Overpowers Youngstown State, 11-0 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – After a emotional 11-inning win over Michigan Sunday, the Ohio State softball team (37-13 overall, 10-4 in the Big Ten) showed no sign of a letdown in clubbing in-state opponent Youngstown State, 11-0, in game one of a doubleheader with the Penguins.
OSU scored one run in the bottom of the first before the floodgates opened in the second and third innings, when OSU racked up four and six runs, respectively.
“We’ve had some really tough conference games and we just came off a huge win,” Linda Kalafatis, OSU head coach, said. “That can make a team relax a little when you play out of conference. It was good to see us not do that today.”
Katie Chain (Jr., North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) allowed just three YSU hits and notched nine strikeouts in five innings of work.
Jenn Link (So., Yorba Linda, Calif./Sonora) opened the bottom of the first inning with a single to the pitcher After swiping second base and third base, she scored on a single to left field by Kristine Himes (So., Bolivar, Ohio/Tuscarawas Valley.
The Buckeyes translated four hits and an YSU error into four runs in the bottom of the second inning. Sarah West (Jr., Galloway, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) hit a one-out single to center field. Shortstop Liz Kacsanek (So., Uniontown, Ohio/Green) then reached on an error by second baseman Mistine Hamilton. Annie Dedic (So., Yorba Linda, Calif./Fullerton J.C.) reached first on a fielder’s choice. West scored on the play and Kacsanek was out at second.
After Dedic stole second, she was moved to third on another single to the pitcher by Link. Chrissy Fowler (Jr., Utica, Ohio/Utica) dropped a bunt to score Dedic and move Link to second. Stacy Roth (Jr., Wauseon, Ohio/Wauseon) tripled to right center field to score Link and Fowler. OSU extended its lead to 11-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning, using four hits and three errors to put up six runs. Amy Ellis (So., Erie, Pa.,/Ball State) singled to right field to score Link and Fowler. Rogeanna Hottinger (So., Newark, Ohio/Newark) singled to left field to score Roth.
