Sofball Sweeps Indiana with 2-0 Win – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Wendy Allen (Fr., Moreno Valley, Calif./Moreno Valley) allowed just two hits and struck out nine to lead the Ohio State softball team (31-12 overall, 5-3 Big Ten) to a 2-0 win in game two of a doubleheader at IU Softball Field in Bloomington, Ind. and give OSU its first sweep of the Hoosiers since 1990.
The Buckeyes also defeated IU, 2-0, in game one of the twin bill. The Buckeyes totaled seven hits against IU starter Heather Stillians, who fell to 3-6 with the loss.
“Wendy was outstanding for us today,” Linda Kalafatis, OSU head coach, said. “We hung in there and produced runs late in the game when we needed them. We have told the team they need to be tough and today – scoring two runs late in each game on the road – showed the character of this team.”
With the game scoreless heading into the bottom half of the sixth inning, OSU scored two runs on a two hits and an error.
Kristine Himes (So., Bolivar, Ohio/Tuscarawas Valley) hit a towering shot that was misplayed by rightfielder Melissa Narewski at the wall, allowing Himes to reach third base. Jenn Link (So., Yorba Linda, Calif./Sonora) scored Himes with a double to left center field. Amy Ellis (So., Erie, Pa./Ball State) singled to first base to move Link to third base.Link scored when she stole home on a double steal. Ellis stole second on the play.
After giving up just her second hit of the game to open the top of the seventh inning, Allen retired the next three batters to secure the win.
OSU returns to action next Friday when it plays host to Michigan State in a doubleheader at Buckeye Field. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
