Box Score
COLUMBUS, Ohio–Katie Chain tossed a one-hitter and struck out 13 in just five innings to lead the Ohio State softball team (23-9 overall) to a 10-0 win over Toledo.
With the win, Chain improved her record to 9-5. Stacy Roth (Jr., Wauson, Ohio/Wauseon) went 3-for3 for the Buckeyes. Sarah West (Jr., Galloway, Ohio/Hillard Davidson) and Annie Dedic (So., Yorba Linda, Calif./Fullerton J.C.) each went 2-for-3 with two runs batted in.
The Buckeyes jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on the strength of five hits and two errors. Leadoff batter Anna Smith (Jr., Walnut, Calif./Diamond Bar) set the tone for the game, when she scored after Toledo catcher Tiffany Edgar’s overthrow reached the right field corner, allowing Smith to give OSU a 1-0 lead without getting a hit.
Link walked, Roth singled to left field. After a double-steal put Link and Roth on second and third, respectively, West doubled to left center to give OSU a 3-0 lead. Kristine Himes (So., Bolivar, Ohio/Tuscarawas Valley) doubled to center field to score West. Chrissy Fowler (Utica, Ohio/Utica) singled up the middle to score Himes. Fowler, who reached second on the throw to home, stole third. After Beth McAbier (Fr., Carrollton, Ohio/Carrollton) drew a walk, Dedic singled to left-center field to score Fowler. A sacrifice bunt by Liz Kacsacnek moved McAbier to third. A sacrifice fly by Smith scored McAbier to put OSU up 7-0. OSU added one run in the second inning and two runs in the fourth, ending the game after the top of the fifth inning due to the eight-run mercy rule.
The Buckeyes open Big Ten play at 2 p.m. Friday when they play host to Iowa in a doubleheader at Buckeye Field.
