COLUMBUS, Ohio–The Ohio State softball team (23-9 overall) defeated in-state opponent Toledo, 3-1, in game one of a doubleheader at Buckeye Field.
OSU had six hits to the Rockets’ five. Wendy Allen (Fr., Moreno Valley, Calif./Moreno Valley) went 2-for-3 with a double and a bunt. Anna Smith (Jr., Walnut, Calif./Diamond Bar, Jenn Link (So., Yorba Linda, Calif./Sonora), Sarah West (Jr., Galloway, Ohio/Hillard Davidson) and Rogeanna Hottinger (So., Newark, Ohio/Newark) each collected one hit.
Kristi DeVries (Fr., Corona, Calif./Corona) did not allow a hit in 3.2 innings of work in relief, striking out four of the 11 batters she faced to pick up the win. Her record improves to 10-3. Colette McMasters took the loss for the Rockets. She is now 2-1 for the season.
OSU took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning. Breana Pozzi (So., Petaluma, Calif./Petaluma) drew a walk to open the inning. Smith singled to left field and Link reached on a bunt to load the bases. Stacy Roth (Jr., Wauseon, Ohio/Wauseon) scored Pozzi with a sacrifice fly to right field.
Toledo answered in the bottom of the third, using three hits to tie the score. Catch Laurie Nagel doubled to left center to open the inning. She later scored on a single by second baseman Vicki Nelson. After another single put runners put runners on first and second, DeVries came in and stopped the Rocket rally.
OSU added two runs in the bottom of the fourth to go take a two-run lead. Kristine Himes (So., Bolivar, Ohio/Tuscarawas Valley) led off the inning with a walk and then Allen dropped a bunt to reach base. West drove an offering from McMasters off the top of the wall in left center to score Himes and Allen. Jenn Elwell (Jr., Dearborn Heights, Mich./Divine Child) made her first start of the season in the pitching circle. She gave up five hits in 3-1 innings of work.
The Buckeyes square off in game two with Toledo at 4 p.m.
