Softball Defeats Indiana-Purdue, 8-1 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio– With the temperature barely above freezing (34 degrees), the Ohio State softball team (13-8 overall) defeated Indiana-Purdue, 8-1, at day two of the Buckeye Invitational at Buckeye Field.
With the win, OSU is a perfect 3-0 at the tournament and earned the No. 1 seed, matching the Buckeyes up with No. 4 Buffalo in a semifinal Sunday at noon. Cleveland State (1-2) and IUPUI (2-1) will play in the other semifinal at 10 a.m.
Katie Chain (So., North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) earned the win for the Buckeyes, allowing a mere three hits and striking out six in the compete-game effort. With the win, Chain improves to 5-4 on the season.
OSU tallied 10 hits to the Jaguars’ three. Pitcher Stacey Lear took the loss. In three innings, she gave up five hits and four earned runs. Megan Fultz came on in relief in the fourth and also gave up five hits.
Stacy Roth (Jr., Wauseon, Ohio/Wauseon) and Liz Kacsanek (So., Uniontown, Ohio/Green) each tallied two hits. Roth had two runs batted in Kristine Himes (So., Bolivar, Ohio/Tuscarawas Valley), Kristi DeVries (Fr., Corona, Ohio/Corona) and Rogeanna Hottinger (So., Newark, Ohio/Newark)each had one RBI.
OSU jumped out to a 2-0 advantage in the bottom of the first. Anna Smith (Jr., Walnut, Calif./Diamond Bar) coaxed a walk and stole second. After Roth singled to left field, advancing Smith to third base. Roth then stole second base. An errant throw by IUPUI catcher Julie Wooten allowed Smith to come home from third to put the first OSU run on the board. A single to right center by DeVries then scored Roth from second. The Buckeyes added three more runs in the bottom half of the third. Jenn Link (So., Yorba Linda, Calif./Sonora) reached second on an error to open the inning. After a Roth groundout moved Link to third, she scored on a ball four-wild pitch to DeVries. Himes smacked a double to the gap in right center to score DeVries all the way from first. Wendy Allen (Moreno Valley, Calif./Moreno Valley) hit a infield single, diving at first to beat out a throw from second baseman Lydia Carrasquillo. Himes moved to third on the play and scored when Hottinger grounded out to the pitcher.
OSU added one run in the fourth and two more in the sixth.
After Amy Ellis (Jr., Erie, Pa.) singled to center field, Roth doubled to left center to score Ellis from first to make the score 6-0 after the fourth inning. After IUPUI managed a run in the top of the sixth inning, OSU responded in the sixth.
Kacsanek opened the inning with a single to right field. Jenn Elwell (Jr., Dearborn Heights, Mich./Divine Child) pinch ran for Kacsanek and moved to second when Chrissy Fowler (Jr., Utica, Ohio/Utica) beat out a throw from second base for an infield single. Ellis laid down a sacrifice bunt, but a throwing error by pitcher Megan Fultz allowed Elwell to score. Fowler scored the final run of the game on a sacrifice fly to center by Roth.
