Softball falls to Cal-State Northridge, 4-1 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State softball team (4-3) fell to Cal-State Northridge, 4-1, in game one of the Campbell-Cartier Classic, hosted by San Diego State at the Sportsplex in Poway, Calif.
Jenn Link (So.,Yorba Linda, Calif./Sonora) returned to the West Coast swinging away, collecting three hits, including a triple she belted to open the Buckeye third. Two batters later, Kristine Himes (So., Bolivar, Ohio/Tuscarawas Valley) coaxed a walk. After ball four, the catcher threw down the third base line, attempting to pick off Link. Instead the overthrow went to left field, allowing Link to score and give OSU a 1-0 lead.
Kristi DeVries (So.,Corona, Calif./Corona) pitched three hitless innings before giving up a two-run home run to Veronica Lopez in the top of fourth inning after issuing a walk to open the inning. Cal-State Northridge pulled away in the seventh inning. With two outs, the Matadors rallied to score two runs on three hits. Wendy Allen (Fr., Moreno Valley, Calif./Moreno Valley) came in to relieve DeVries and got the final out of the inning.
DeVries was handed the first loss of her young career and is now 3-1 for the season. In 6.2 innings of work she allowed four earned runs on four hits and struck out three.
For the Matadors, pitcher Tanya Ledesma allowed four hits and struck out three.
The Buckeyes face off with Long Beach State tonight at 9 p.m.(EST).
