COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State (4-3 overall, 1-2 MIVA), behind a combined 30 kills by Chris Fash (Sr., Orland Park, Ill./Lockport Township H.S.) (match-high 16-kills) and Pieter Olree (Sr., Reading, Pa./Exeter H.S.) (14 kills) defeated the Patriots of George Mason University 3-0 (30-23, 30-27, 30-24) Friday night in St. John Arena. Chris Barnes scored a team-high 11 kills with Jason Wight adding 10 for George Mason (5-2).
Ohio State broke an 1-1 tie in game one with a block by Todd Hill (Sr., Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Scioto H.S.) and Jon Schultz (Jr., Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest H.S.) and an ace serve by Adam Pedersen (Fr., Muskego, Wisc./Muskego H.S.) to go ahead 3-1. The Patriots tied the game at 11 on an ace serve by Andre Melo but a service error put OSU ahead again. A Buckeye error tied the game at 15, but a Greg Lehman (Sr., Galena, Ohio/Big Walnut H.S.) kill put the Buckeyes ahead for good, winning the game 30-23. Ohio State hit .444 for the game to .300 for George Mason.
George Mason had an early 3-1 lead in game two. OSU tied the game at three on a Greg Lehman kill and his ace serve. After ties at four, five and six, OSU scored four consecutive points off a Hill kill, two Patriot errors and a solo block by Hill to take a 10-6 lead. With OSU ahead 13-10, Mason ran off three points from a kill by Barnes and two by Melo to tie the game at 13. OSU went ahead 15-13 but the Patriots tied the game at 15 on a Barnes kill. Two Olree kills, an ace by Greg Lehman and a kill by Fash put the Buckeyes ahead 19-15. George Mason closed to within one point at 20-19 and 26-25 but Ohio State held on to win on a Hill kill at 30-27. For the game Ohio State hit .417 to the Patriots’ .306. After a 1-0 George Mason lead, Ohio State built up an early six to two lead in game three. The Buckeyes expanded the lead to 10 (21-11) and finished the game at 30-24 on a block by Fash and Pedersen. The Buckeyes hit .357 for the game to .086 for George Mason.
For the match Ohio State hit .407 and had 48 kills. George Mason countered by hitting .228 with 46 kills. The Patriots outdug the Buckeyes 29-22 while OSU had an eight to five advantage in blocks. Both teams had four aces.
OSU setter Jon Schultz (Jr., Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest H.S.), in his first start, had 39 assists, five kills, three digs, two assist blocks and an ace serve. He started in place of Mark Peckham (Fr., London, Ontario/Oakridge Secondary H.S.) who is out with an injury.
Ohio State completes the weekend home stand Saturday when they host Indiana-Purdue (2-4 overall, 1-2 MIVA) at 7 p.m. in St. John Arena.
