Softball Shuts Out Robert Morris, 1-0 and 8-0 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State softball team gave its seniors two wins in the last home doubleheader of the season today, after defeating Robert Morris, 1-0 and 8-0, at Buckeye Field. The Buckeyes improve to 28-24 for the season, while the Colonials fall to 20-20 overall. Competing in her last home game, Senior Renae Weigel led the Buckeyes offensively, going 3-for-5 with one walk, two triples and an RBI against the Colonials.
Game One
Ohio State scored first as Anna Smith led off with a single and then advanced to second on a stolen base. Jennifer Link followed with another single, proceeded by another steal from Smith and Link. Smith would then score off a wild pitch by Colonials’ pitcher Lauren Dickenson.
Katie Chain (12-9) was solid inside the circle for the Buckeyes, completing the game and giving up two hits and striking out seven. Dickenson fell to 13-12 for the season, after giving up one run off three hits and striking out two.
Head Coach Linda Kalafatis posted her 100th win at Ohio State with her team’s 1-0 victory over the Colonials. She now has a 101-110 record at Ohio State.
Game Two
The Buckeyes again scored early on the Colonials driving in two runs off a stolen base and a double. Smith opened the inning with a base on balls and then advanced to second off a stolen base. Link sacrificed to send Smith to third. She would then score off another stolen base, her fifth theft of the day. Two batters later, Rogeanna Hottinger followed with an RBI-double to centerfield. Ohio State led, 2-0.
In the bottom of the third, Kristine Himes opened with a solo home run, her 10th on the season, to centerfield. Weigel followed with a single to centerfield, but was out at second on a fielder’s choice from Hottinger. Holly English then singled, proceeded with a double steal by Hottinger and English. Chrissy Fowler sacrificed to send Hottinger home. English would later score on a throwing error by the pitcher.
Weigel had an RBI-tripled in the bottom of the fourth and again tripled in the sixth, now tying her for third place on the all-time RBI list with 90. It would be one of two triples that Weigel posted against Robert Morris and now ties her for third place on the all-time RBI list with 90.
The Buckeyes tallied two more runs in the last two innings to give them the 8-0 victory.
Ohio State’s Kristi Martin completed the game, giving up no runs, two hits and striking out nine. Stephani Ehrenfeld collected the loss, giving up six runs and walking four.
Ohio State will end its regular season this weekend in a two-game series against the Penn State Nittany Lions at State College, Pa. Saturday’s game begins at 2 p.m. and Sunday’s game begins at noon.
