Ohio State Softball Crushes UNC-Charlotte, 15-5 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State softball team dropped UNC-Charlotte, 15-5, today at the Winthrop Invitational in Rock Hill, S.C. Senior Renae Weigel led the Buckeyes, going 2-for-4 and blasting her first home run of the season in the bottom of the third inning. Ohio State is now 10-8 overall and 3-0 at the tournament, while UNC-Charlotte falls to 9-15 overall.
UNC-Charlotte opened the game with a two-RBI single from Susan Coyle to go up 2-0.
The Buckeyes evened the score in the bottom of the first inning when Anna Smith led off with a single to the first baseman. Holly English followed with a double to centerfield to score Smith. Roth then belted a double to score English.
UNC-Charlotte notched two more runs in the bottom of the third when Stephanie Dunlap singled to send home Coyle.
The Buckeyes would again score in the same offensive fashion as English belted her second double of the game to centerfield to score Smith. Jennifer Link then reached first on an error from the first baseman and stole second. Weigel followed with her first home run of the season with a blast over the leftfield wall. Ohio State took its first lead of the game, 5-4.
Ohio State added five more runs in the fifth and sixth inning to post the 15-5 win. Kristine Himes, who went 2-for-3 and three runs batted in today, posted her third home run of the season to score Hottinger and Weigel. She now only needs one more home run to break the OSU single season freshman record held by Roth.
Katie Chain posted her fifth win of the season, pitching three innings, giving up only one run and striking out five. The Buckeyes have advanced to the single-game elimination bracket where they will compete against North Carolina A&T at 5 p.m. today.
