Softball Tops Pacific, 7-6, In A Seventh Inning Comeback – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State softball team came back in the top of seventh inning to defeat Pacific, 7-6, in the SDSU Campbell/Cartier Softball Classic in Poway, Calif. Kristine Himes blasted her first collegiate two-run home run to capture the win and snap a three-game losing streak for the Buckeyes. Ohio State is now 4-4 overall, while Pacific falls to 3-3 in tournament action.
The Buckeyes opened the game with a 2-0 lead when Anna Smith led off with a single to right field. She advanced to second on a Holly English sacrifice bunt to the pitcher. Stacy Roth followed with a home run blast to left field. It was her first of the season and gave the Buckeyes the lead heading into the bottom of the first.
Pacific did come back to go up 5-3 with hits in the first and third innings. However, the Buckeyes followed up by scoring three runs in the top of the six to take the lead once again. Rogeanna Hottinger opened the inning with a home run to centerfield, her first as a Buckeye. Himes and English both notched singles and scored when Jennifer Link doubled to left field. Ohio State evened the score at 5.
The Tigers came back for the last time in the bottom of the sixth when Estee Keala Okumura scored off an error.
Down by one run, Renae Weigel began the seventh inning with a single to right field. Two batters later, Himes pounded a homer over the leftfield fence to score two RBI and notch Ohio State’s first win at the SDSU Campbell/Cartier Softball Classic.
Kristi Martin got the save after Pacific’s Liz Niadna popped up to left field for the last out. In the circle, Toni Hileman recorded the win after going two innings and holding the Tigers to one hit.
As a team, the Buckeyes posted 13 hits to Pacific’s seven. But the Buckeyes recorded a season-high four errors in the game.
Ohio State will next compete against Sacramento State today at 6 p.m.
