Ohio State Softball Nips Sacramento State, 3-2 – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Buckeyes edged Sacramento State, 3-2, in the SDSU Cartier/Campbell Softball Classic in Poway, Calif. The Buckeyes posted three runs off 13 hits to improve 5-4 for the season. The Hornets drop to 3-5 overall.
Ohio State opened the second inning with the lead and maintained it throughout the game. Renae Weigel started the Buckeye rally with a single to centerfield. She advanced to second on a pass ball. Rogeanna Hottinger notched a single to send Weigel to third. On a successful double steal sign, Weigel came home to score the first Buckeye run. Ohio State led 1-0.
The Buckeyes followed in the second with another run, when Anna Smith led off with a single to right field. She would advance to second on a Holly English sacrifice slap. Two batters later, Stacy Roth blasted a single into centerfield, sending Smith home. The Buckeyes up 2-0.
At the top of the fifth inning English lined a perfect bunt up the third baseline to open the inning. Roth followed again with another single into right field to score English.
The Hornets posted two runs in the bottom of the fifth, but was unable to post the come back.
Kristi Martin held Sacramento State to six hits and struck out five. Martin is now 2-2 for the season.
The Buckeyes will conclude the SDSU Campbell/Cartier Softball Classic tomorrow as they go up against No. 3 Fresno State at 9:30 a.m. and No. 15 Long Beach State at noon.
