Softball Opens 2000 Season With A Win – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State Softball team posted its first win of the 2000 season after defeating McNeese State, 5-3, in the LSU Tiger Classic Tournament in Baton Rouge, La. Senior pitcher Toni Hileman posted her first win this season, going five innings for the Buckeyes and giving up only two runs.
The Buckeyes took a 1-0 lead as sophomore Anna Smith began the first inning with a single to the shortstop. She would score two batters later when Roth was caught stealing at second.
The Buckeyes added another run in the third when Holly English reached first after being hit by a pitch. She would score later on a Sarah West’s sacrifice fly, giving the Buckeyes a 2-0 lead.
With one out in the fourth, English singled to left field, scoring Kristine Himes. Martin followed by scoring off an error from the first basemen. The Buckeyes led 4-0.
McNeese would fight back within one after notching three runs in the top of sixth. However, with one out, Smith singled and scored two batters later to give the Buckeyes the 5-3 win. Smith finished the game going 3-for-4 with two runs.
The Buckeyes will begin their second game of the day when they next take on Nicholls State, 1 p.m. in Baton Rouge, La.
