Softball Wins Buckeye Invitational – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio—The Ohio State softball team won the Buckeye Invitational after sweeping Robert Morris and Shawnee State today at Buckeye Field.
The Buckeyes played a close game against Robert Morris until the seventh inning, when Stacy Roth (Jr., Wauseon, Ohio/Wauseon), Chrissy Fowler (Jr., Utica, Ohio/Wright State) and Kari Crandell (Fr., Hendersonville, Tenn./Hendersonville) all scored to put Ohio State ahead of Robert Morris. Ohio State went on to win the game, 7-3.
Ohio State took a quick 3-0 lead over Shawnee State by the second inning. The Buckeyes were led by Fowler and Holly English (Sr., Akron, Ohio/Springfield), who both posted a run and a hit. Pitcher Kristi DeVries (Fr., Corona, Calif./Corona) posted 11 strikeouts.
Earlier in the day, Robert Morris defeated Grand Slam by a score of 2-1. Robert Morris started off the scoring in the bottom of the third inning. Grand Slam answered back by scoring a run at the top of the fourth. The game remained tied until the bottom of the seventh when Robert Morris scored to take the win.
In Grand Slam’s second game of the day, they scored three runs in the first inning on their way to a 9-3 win over Shawnee State. Shawnee State scored three runs, one in the third and another in the fourth. But Grand Slam proved victorious as they scored the winning run in the bottom of the fourth. They went on to add five additional runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to bring the final score to 9-3.
In the third game of the day, Robert Morris junior Lauren Dickinson hit a two-run home run in the first inning. Robert Morris then scored another four runs in the second inning before Shawnee State was able to score. In the fourth inning, Robert Morris scored another sevens runs, bringing the final score to 15-1. Ohio State is playing host to the Ohio Collegiate Charity Classic at Firestone Stadium in Akron, Ohio, Oct. 6-8.
