Atlanta, Ga. – The Ohio State softball team (8-12 overall, 0-0 in Big Ten) lost their final game of the Georgia Tech/Buzz Classic to Campbell, 9-5.
The Fighting Camels jumped on OSU starting pitcher Meaghan Robinson (Sr., Naples, Fla.) in the top half of the first inning with a grand slam home run by Leslie Standiford. Robinson, who missed three-weeks prior to the tournament with a strained pectoral muscle, was removed from the game after the second inning. The outing was her shortest of the 1999 campaign.
The Buckeyes did not go away quietly. In the bottom half of the first inning, they rallied to tie the score. With one out, Anna Smith (Fr., Walnut, Calif.) beat out a throw from the shortstop for an infield hit. Jaime Chenevey (Sr., Wooster, Ohio) immediately drove home Smith with her 10th career home run over the centerfield wall to cut the Campbell lead in half. The OSU rally continued with the next batter as Katie Wessendorf (So, Waterville, Ohio), lined a single leftfield. She advanced to second on a wild pitch by Campbell starter Jenn Bernard. The next batter Stacy Roth (Fr., Wauseon, Ohio) drove home Wessendorf with a single to left-centerfield. Roth tied the score two batters later of an RBI single by Holly English (So., Akron, Ohio). But the Camels pulled away in the top of the fifth inning with four runs off three hits to increase its lead to 8-4. Both teams added a run in the final inning to bring the score to its final, 9-5.
Toni Hileman (Jr., Alliance, Ohio) was charged with the loss. Her record is now 3-9 on the year.
With the loss, OSU is now eliminated from the Georgia/Tech Buzz Classic. The team was scheduled to play at 5:30 but the opponent Tennessee-Martin forfeited due to injuries.
The Buckeyes will open their home season on Tuesday with a doubleheader against Miami (O.) at 2 p.m.
