ATLANTA, Ga. – The Ohio State softball team (8-11) finished day one of the Georgia Tech/Buzz Classic with an 11-3 loss to Maryland. OSU is now 1-1 in the tournament.
The Buckeyes got off to a good start with a run in the top of the first inning. With one out, Anna Smith (Fr., Walnut, Calif.) dropped a bunt single and advanced to second base when Jaime Chenevey (Sr., Wooster, Ohio) blooped a single to shallow centerfield. Smith scored three batters later off a throwing error by the Maryland second baseman.
But the Terrapins answered in a hurry. In the bottom half of the first, they scored all the runs they would need with four runs off five hits.
Inside the circle, Toni Hileman (Jr., Alliance, Ohio) was charged with the loss. She gave up six runs in three innings of work. Her record is now 3-8 on the year. Offensively, Smith paced OSU with a 2-for-4 one run batted in game.
The Buckeyes will hit the field tomorrow with a game against Campbell at 12:30 p.m.
