ATLANTA, Ga. – The Ohio State softball team (8-10 overall, 0-0 in Big Ten) opened the Georgia Tech/Buzz Classic with a 3-2, extra-inning win over Evansvillle.
With two outs in the top of the ninth inning and Jaime Chenevey (Sr., Wooster, Ohio) on second base, Katie Wessendorf (So., Waterville, Ohio) ripped a single down the rightfield line to put OSU ahead for good, 3-2.
The game was a definite pitchers dual. After a three-week layoff due to a pectoral strain, Meaghan Robinson (Sr., Naples, Fla.) showed no ill-effects of the injury and earned the win with a gusty eight inning performance. Both runs she gave up were unearned and she recorded and impressive seven strikeouts. Toni Hileman (Jr., Alliance, Ohio) pitched a perfect ninth inning to earn her first save of the season.
“It’s a definite lift to have Meaghan back,” head coach Linda Kalafatis said. “Evansville is a good team and they played a heck of a ballgame. Our defense made the plays in the extra-innings and Katie came through in the clutch.
“Cheryl Palaroan (Sr., Reno, Nev.) did a great job getting on base, moving runners over and scoring runs for us. She’s under the weather but you couldnt tell by the way she played. In tight games it takes a total team effort and we got that today.”
Palaroan finished the game going 2-for-4 with a run batted in. Chenevey had a solid game going 3-for-4 with an RBI.
The Buckeyes will continue through the tournament tonight with a game at 8 p.m. against Maryland.
