COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State softball team announced its 2000 schedule today. The Buckeyes compete in four winter tournaments and begin the Big Ten season on April 7 against Purdue.
“We are very excited to begin the new millennium with a very competitive non-conference and Big Ten schedule,” head coach Linda Kalafatis said. “Our squad is ready to make an impact and improve from last season.”
The Buckeyes will officially begin the season in Baton Rouge, La. in the LSU Tiger Classic, Feb. 12-13. The team will face McNeese State, Nichols State and Louisiana State. LSU finished the 1999 season as the No. 11-ranked team in the nation.
On Feb. 17-20, Ohio State will head to San Diego, Calif. to take on several of the top schools in California. Ohio State will battle San Diego State, Cal-State Northridge, Pacific, Sacramento State and No. 5 Fresno State. From there Ohio State competes in the Florida International Tournament in Miami, Fla., facing Florida Atlantic, Pittsburgh, Arkansas and Florida A&M, March 3-5. In the Winthrop Invitational, The Buckeyes take on Tennessee Tech, North Carolina-Wilmington and North Carolina-Charlotte in Rock Hill, S.C, March 3-5.
In a new conference schedule setup, Ohio State will compete against Big Ten teams in a single and doubleheader game format. This season the Buckeyes take on Purdue, Indiana, Minnesota and Wisconsin at home and No. 16 Michigan, No. 14 Michigan State, Iowa and Northwestern on the road.
“Our Big Ten season is especially tough this season, as we will go up against Michigan, Michigan State and Iowa on the road,” Kalafatis said. “However, we have a strong tournament season that will get us great experience before heading into the conference season. I have no doubt that this team will be ready to compete against the top teams in our conference. We are excited and gearing up for a great season of Ohio State softball.”
Last season, Ohio State ended the season with a 20-32 overall record and was 5-19 in the Big Ten.
