WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. –
The Ohio State Softball team (32-21 overall, 9-12 in Big Ten) swept a doubleheader over Purdue (28-28 overall, 7-14 in Big Ten), 3-0 and 5-2.
Game one showcased a pitching battle between the Women’s Professional Fastpitch league’s fourth and fifth picks in the first round. The fourth pick Purdue’s Sheryl Scheve dueled with OSU’s fifth pick Jodi Dolan (Sr., Fallon, Nev.). The two women pitched complete games, but Dolan came out with the definite edge. She earned the win by tossing a complete game seven inning shutout and gave up only five hits in the process. As for Scheve, she gave up three runs, two earned and struck out three. Her record dropped to 21-19.
Offensively, the Buckeyes were paced by Cheryl Palaroan (Jr., Reno, Nev.). She went 1-for-3, scored two runs, and tied an OSU single game record with three stolen bases.
In game two, the schools battled to a 2-2 tie until the OSU half of the sixth inning.
With Palaroan on from a lead-off walk, Dolan blasted her third home run of the season over the leftfield wall to give OSU a 4-2 advantage. Dolan, who earlier in the season broke the OSU all-time career home run mark of 10, now has 12 bombs in her career. She finished the day 2-for-3 with three RBI.
The Buckeyes would add an insurance run in the sixth when Candace Kollen (Sr., Cerritos, Calif.) scored from third base off a wild pitch.
Toni Hileman (So., Alliance, Ohio) improved her record to 6-3 on the year. She hurled a complete game, and gave up two runs (one earned). Purdue’s Jenny Deno saw her record fall to 4-6.
On the day, OSU totaled seven stolen bases, which gives them 89 on the season and sets a new Ohio State single-season record. The old mark of 83 was set in 1990.
On Thursday, the Buckeyes will head to Akron, Ohio to face Kent State at Firestone Stadium at 7 p.m.
