COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State softball team (24-20-0 overall, 5-11 in Big Ten) swept a doubleheader over the Youngstown State Penquins (15-22-0 overall) winning game one 8-0 in five innings and game two 6-4. In game one, the Buckeyes bombed the Penquins with eight runs in five innings. Jaime Chenevey (Jr., Wooster, Ohio) led the way with a 2-for-3 performance including her second home run of the season and three RBI. Renae Weigel (So., Coldwater, Ohio) and Holly English (Fr., Akron, Ohio) also chipped in with 2-for-2 and 2-for-3 days, respectively. OSU pitcher Meaghan Robinson (Jr., Naples, Fla.) started the game but was knocked out when YSUs Chris Notareschi lined a shot back to the circle which hit Robinson above her right knee cap. Robinson would later return to the field in game two.
Jodi Dolan (Sr., Fallon, Nev.) improved her record to 8-6 with four innings of shutout ball. YSUs Michelle Gonger saw her record fall to 8-11. In game two, the Buckeyes jumped out again with a 5-0 lead after the second inning and would eventually win the game by a 6-4 margin. In her first start of the season, Kelli Tom (Jr., Fullerton, Calif.) earned the win (1-0) with four innings of shutout ball. The pitcher underwent knee surgery in the fall and is near full recovery. Candace Kollen (Sr., Cerritos, Calif.) led the offense with a 2-for-4, two RBI day. Weigel and English also chipped in two more hits each. YSUs Melanie Pangallo earned the loss.
The win marked the 44th in the two-year tenure of OSU head coach Linda Kalafatis which happens to tie the OSU all-time mark for most wins in the first two seasons of a coach (both Diane Thompson in 1979-80 and Gail Davenport in 1989-90). The Buckeyes will play host to Ohio University in a doubleheader tomorrow at 3 p.m.
