Softball Splits Doubleheader With Michigan State – Ohio State Buckeyes

%^$ COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State softball team (22-19-0 overall, 5-10 in Big Ten) split a doubleheader with the Michigan State Spartans (25-14-0 overall, 8-7 in Big Ten) winning game one, 6-1 and losing game two, 3-1. In the first contest, MSU struck first with a run in the top of the third inning off an RBI double by Carrie Dunn.
%^$An inning later, the OSU offense would wake up with a three-run rally to take the lead. With two outs, Jaime Chenevey (Jr., Wooster, Ohio) started the rally with a sneaky bunt single. Renae Weigel (So., Coldwater, Ohio) and Jodi Dolan (Sr., Fallon, Nev.) followed with back to back singles to score Chenevey. Toni Hileman (So., Alliance, Ohio) then got on base via an error by second baseman Carrie Fry which proved costly as it cleared the bases to give the Buckeyes a 3-1 lead.
%^$OSU would tack on three more insurance runs in the bottom half of the sixth inning. Chenevey, Natalie Tomoguchi (Sr., Irvine, Calif.) and Candace Kollen (Sr., Cerritos, Calif.) would account for the runs with RBI singles to give OSU its 6-1 lead.
%^$Kristi Martin (Fr., La Mirada, Calif.) was superb on the mound, improving her record to 7-3 on the season. She pitched a complete game five-hitter and struck out three. MSUs Stefanie Noffsinger was charged with the loss. Her record fell to 12-8. She pitched 3.2 innings, gave up three runs, one of which was earned. In game two, the Buckeye offense could not get untracked with one run off nine hits, losing 3-1 in the end.
%^$MSU struck first in the bottom of the second inning with two runs of a double by Danielle Manzardo.
%^$The Spartans would stretch the lead to 3-0 with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning off a Molly Hugan double. Ohio State posted its only run in the top of the seventh inning when Cheryl Palaroan (Jr., Reno, Nev.) scored off a Chenevey single. Meaghan Robinson (Jr., Naples, Fla.) was charged with the loss. She gave up two runs, one of which was earned in 1.2 innings of work.
%^$Kelli Tom (Jr., Fullerton, Calif.) pitched a very effective 4.1 innings of relief work for Ohio State. She gave up one run off four hits and struck out one.
%^$MSUs Jacqueline Hall improved her record to 5-3 on the season. Erica Strutz earned the save. The two teams will play the rubber match tomorrow at noon at Buckeye Field.%^$
