FULLERTON, Calif.–The No. 3 Husky softball team overcame a nemesis on Thursday night at the Kia Klassic, downing Southwestern Louisiana for the first time ever to remain undefeated after the first day of the Kia Klassic in Fullerton, Calif. With the 3-1 win, UW stands at 15-3 on the season and will face Southwest Texas State tomorrow at 3 p.m.
The 24th-ranked Lady Cajuns started the scoring in the second inning. Jana Mower singled and Megan Fields blasted a long double to the right center wall to score Mower from first. But USL could not capitalize on its five additional hits the rest of the game.
All three of Washingtons runs came in the fourth inning. Freshman Kelly Hauxhurst led off with a walk, and classmate Kim DePaul sacrificed her to second. Junior Becky Newbry doubled to left center to bring Hauxhurst home, and sophomore Jennifer Spediaccis two-bagger knocked Newbry in. Spediacci then scored off junior Jami Nyblods single for the third run.
Spediacci (7-1) picked up the win, striking out four before sophomore Jamie Graves relieved her in the sixth for her second save of the year.
