SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Day two of the Air Touch Cellular Capital Classic proved to be a day of ups and downs for the Buckeyes (7-7-0 overall, 0-0-0 in Big Ten).
In the first contest, one bad inning proved costly as Ohio State lost to Baylor, 4-1. Pitcher Toni Hileman’s (So., Alliance, Ohio) only bad inning came in the third when she gave up four runs off three hits. She was charged with her second (1-2) loss of the season.
The game did have a high point for the Buckeyes. In the fourth inning, Jodi Dolan (Sr., Fallon, Nev.) blasted her way into Ohio State softball immortality. Facing Baylor’s Stacey Allison, Dolan belted her 10th career homerun, which broke the Ohio State all-time career record of nine held by both Krinon Clark (1991-94) and Marla Pickard (1991-94). The dinger was the first of the season for Dolan.
The second contest saw the Buckeyes lose a heartbreaker to host school Sacramento State. Down 6-0 in the top of the sixth inning, Sacramento State rolled off seven unanswered runs in the final two innings to win the contest 7-6. Pitcher Meaghan Robinson (Jr., Naples, Fla.) gave up four runs in 0.1 innings of relief work and was charged with her third (2-3) loss of the year. Ohio State’s Holly English (Fr., Springfield, Ohio) notched her first hit and RBI of her career. In the sixth inning, English knocked in a pair of runs off a single to leftfield.
The final game of the day saw the Buckeyes defeat Southwest Missouri State 4-1. Kristi Martin (Fr., La Mirada, Calif.) pitched a strong game going seven innings without giving up an earned run. She improved her record to 2-2 on the year.
The victory was OSU head coach Linda Kalafatis’ 300th career victory.
The Buckeyes will return to the field tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. to face Pacific with the winner moving on to a 5 p.m. contest.
