October 7, 1998
COLUMBUS, Ohio — The weather is getting cooler day-by-day and so must the blood in the Buckeyes’ veins as they make a run for the Big Ten championship. Both Ohio State (4-4-3) and Xavier (7-4-0) are undefeated in their conferences as they face each other in today’s match. The Musketeers rest atop the Atlantic 10 with a 3-0 mark while the Bucks are best in the Big Ten with a 2-0 record, tied with Indiana.
OSU vs. XAVIER: Ohio State leads the all-time series 8-6-4 since the teams first met in 1978 (2-2 OT tie at Columbus). Last year OSU beat the Musketeers 3-1 and since 1994 the Buckeyes and the Musketeers have traded wins and losses.
SCOUTING THE MUSKETEERS: Xavier upped its Atlantic 10 record to 3-0 last weekend by defeating both Duquesne 1-0 and St. Bonaventure 4-3. The Musketeers, coming off a winning weekend, improved their overall record to 7-4. The last loss for the Musketeers was against Cincinnati on Sept. 28 when the Bearcats handed XU a 2-0 defeat. Both OSU and XU have faced Dayton (2-0 Xavier win, 1-0 OSU loss) Evansville (2-0 Xavier win, 4-0 OSU win) and Wright State (2-1 Xavier win, 1-1 OSU tie) this season. In the last two games Koen Kuiken (Jr., FWD.) has scored both game-winning goals. The first against St. Bonaventure in double overtime and also against Duquesne. Sophomore goalkeeper Paul Wesseling recorded his third shutout of the season against Duquesne. Weseling was last week’s player of the week in the Atlantic 10 as he tallied eight saves and stopped a PK in the Musketeer victory.
LOWERY STILL IN RACE FOR BEST KEEPER: Senior Jon Lowery is third for goals against average in the Big Ten with a 0.83 mark. Indiana’s T.J. Hannig leads the conference at 0.31 and Penn State’s White Gibson is second with a 0.73 GAA. Lowery finished second to Hannig (0.54) last year with a 0.75, but still claimed first team all-Big Ten laurels as the best goalkeeper in the conference.
THAT KID FROM JAMAICA IS ALL RIGHT: Senior forward Craig Tomlinson has scored a point in six of 11 games and is averaging 1.18 points per game. The Buckeyes are 4-0-1 when the Manchester, Jamaica native finds the net with his freaky moves and sinister speed. He and Matt Daniel have both recorded four points in Big Ten play, the most on the team. Deez Buckeyes are Irie mon (Irie is Jamaican for great or super. Also a salutation).
TOMLINSON ALSO MAKES BIG TEN WAVES: Tomlinson is tied for second for goals in the Big Ten (5) and tied for third in both assists (3) and scoring (13P).
LOWERY CREEPS INTO RECORD BOOK: With 11.5 shutouts as a Buckeye keeper, Lowery has moved into second for career shutouts. Dave Scheer (1985-88) holds the record with 19.0. His 4.0 blankings in 1998 ties for third on the season ledger.
FERMINE SEES FIRST ACTION: Sophomore forward Guiddel Fermine saw his first action as a Buckeye in OSU’s rout of Wisconsin. The walk-on and former OSU club teamer logged 14 minutes in the match as a reserve.
NATIONALLY RANKED OPPONENTS: Five of OSU’s 1998 opponents are currently ranked in the NSCAA top 25 poll. Indiana (2), Virginia (4), Creighton (8), Butler (12) and Furman (19).

BUCKEYES BLANK BADGERS: The team earned it’s second conference victory with a 3-0 win over Wisconsin. The first goal for the Buckeyes came from a penalty shot by senior captain Daniel. The free kick was awarded after Tomlinson was tripped by the Wisconsin goalkeeper, Tim Caprez . The Buckeyes scored two goals during the second half. The first came on a pass from Peterson Jerome over to the left corner that Sean Feldhaus tapped into the upper right corner. Just nine minutes later, Tomlinson headed in a cross from Jason Ciminieri off an indirect kick.

Feldhaus has recorded 15 shots in the last four games but unfortunately, none have managed to cross the plane.
HEAD COACH JOHN BLUEM: The 1975 Hartwick College graduate is the ninth-winningest active coach in NCAA Division I soccer. Bluem was named conference coach of the year three times during his six-year stint at Fresno State and guided the Bulldogs to four conference championships and four NCAA tournament appearances.
MATCH 10 AT WRIGHT STATE: For the third time this season, the team played to a draw as the Buckeyes tied Wright State, 1-1 in double overtime. John Monebrake struck again in the 42nd minute, taking advantage of a Wright State turnover and putting OSU on the board first. The score marked his third goal in as many games. Wright State’s Ryan McNichol pushed the contest to overtime with nine minutes remaining as Travis Sobers set up the scoring effort after a pass from Marco Elcock.
MATCH NINE AT CREIGHTON: Mike Bustos scored the only goal of game in the 31st minute as eighth-ranked Creighton defeated Ohio State 1-0 to win the Diadora Challenge. Tomlinson scored the first goal of the match in the 61st minute when he served a ball that nicked off Bulldog defender Dusty Greu and into the net. Drake’s Eric Wilson answered quickly with a goal just 20 seconds later when he rocketed a shot past Lowery from 20 yards out. The Bulldogs’ Martin Guhn put Drake ahead in the 88th minute, but OSU roared back just over a minute later when Roger Roush crossed a ball to the left post that Monebrake tapped in, knotting the game at 2-2, forcing overtime. The Buckeyes ended the contest just 44 seconds into overtime when Brooks Humphreys headed the ball backwards to the right post, finding Monebrake for the game winner.
MATCH SEVEN AT NORTHWESTERN: Daniel recorded a goal and assisted on the game winner as the OSU soccer team blanked Northwestern 3-0. Jerome put the Buckeyes up 1-0 in the 27th minute when Daniel fed him a ball down the right side that he touched into the net for the game-winner. Daniel put the Buckeyes up 2-0 with seven minutes remaining in the first half when he buried a direct kick from 22 yards out after a foul. Tomlinson scored his third goal of the season when he sliced through the Wildcat defense and beat keeper Matt Keeler from 25 yards out in the 56th minute. Lowery recorded his third shutout of the season.
MATCH SIX AT EASTERN ILLINOIS: The Buckeyes drew first blood as Humphreys knocked in a Chad Campbell ball three minutes into the game. The Panthers got even in the 39th minute when Jake Spain headed a ball at goal and it deflected in for his first goal of the season. The game remained tied for the rest of regulation, but not for long as the Panthers scored four minutes into the sudden death overtime. Dylan Shaughnessy ripped a shot from 25 yards out that careened off a defender and into the goal for the game-winner.
MATCH FIVE VS. BOWLING GREEN: As the temperature topped out at 99 degrees, Ohio State and Bowling Green played to a 1-1 double overtime draw. Tomlinson came off the bench to put the Buckeyes up 1-0 in the 37th minute with his second goal of the season. Ciminieri headed a ball over Adam Erhard that Tomlinson flicked with his head, beat Falcon keeper Scott Vallow to the loose ball and stroked it into the net past Vallow’s legs. The Falcons came back four minutes later as Fred Degland put in his second goal in two games when he picked up a deflected ball and buried it far post past a diving Lowery.
MATCH FOUR AT BUTLER: The team was handed a 2-1 loss to Butler at Indianapolis . Jeremy Harkins put the Bulldogs on top 1-0 with four minutes remaining in the first half when he netted a long pass to the right post. Butler went up 2-0 five minutes into the second half when David Beck finished a beautiful play that was crossed, headed once and then headed into the net. OSU’s S. Feldhaus brought the Buckeyes within one in the 69th minute when Tomlinson pushed him through the middle.
MATCHES TWO/THREE – NIKE CLASSIC: OSU won the third annual NIKE Soccer Classic after defeating Evansville 4-0 and tying Furman 0-0. The Buckeyes were declared tournament champions by winning the goals scored tie breaker. MATCH ONE VS. DAYTON: The Flyers netted the lone goal of the contest in the 62nd minute when OSU was nabbed for a foul about 10 yards outside of the box.
