COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State sophomore Maxwell Moldovan entered the final round two shots out of the lead and would fire a bogey-free 4-under 68 to come back and win the Robert Kepler Intercollegiate on Sunday at Columbus Country Club.
The win was the third of the spring for Moldovan who has now carded a round of par or better in each of his last 13 rounds.
On Sunday, he had made just one birdie through the first 13 holes. But he stuffed an approach on the short uphill par-4 14th and then got up-and-down for birdie at the par-5 15th. That gave him a one-shot lead with three to play. Having parred both 16 and 17, he needed just a par at 18 to secure the win. But he would roll in a 20-foot birdie putt to win by two shots.
A Buckeye has now won the Robert Kepler Intercollegiate 24 times and he is the first since Daniel Wetterich won in 2019. Behind Moldovan, the Buckeyes finished runner-up as a team at 17-under par. This was the fifth consecutive tournament Ohio State has finished under-par.
Sophomore Adam Wallin closed his opening round with five birdies in the final six holes. He nearly matched that today as he made three birdies in the final six to card a final round 1-under 71. He finished tied for 8th at 4-under for the tournament.
Junior Patrick Schmucking posted rounds of 70-72-74 to finish at even-par for the 54 holes and in 18th place. JonErik Alford and Grant Engle, who both played as individuals this week, each finished a shot back of Schmucking at 1-over par. Engle carded a final round 72 after a season-low 69 in the second round on Saturday.
Jackson Chandler and Marco Steyn rounded out the Buckeye scoring five this weekend as both finished in a tie for 48th at 6-over par. Each player shot a 2-over 74 on Sunday. Drew Mulcahy, who also played as an individual, finished his tournament with a round of 81.
The Buckeyes will look to take this momentum into next weekend’s Big Ten Championship at French Lick Resort in French Lick, Ind. The first round starts on Friday morning.
