Michigan State Gets By No. 15 Men’s Soccer, 3-0 – Ohio State Buckeyes

%^$COLUMBUS, Ohio-No. 15 Ohio State men’s soccer (6-2-1 overall, 1-1-0 Big Ten) fell to Michigan State (6-2-1, 2-1-0 Big Ten), 3-0, Sunday at Old College Field in East Lansing. The Spartans scored all three of their unanswered goals in the second half, with the third coming in the last 17 seconds of play. The loss marks the first time Ohio State has not scored in a match this season. The match Sunday also was the Buckeyes’ first since Sept. 26 and the tragic death of freshman defender Connor Senn.%^$
%^$The first half was even, with Michigan State holding a slight 6-4 advantage in shots.%^$
%^$MSU’s John Minagawa-Webser tallied the gamewinner at the 53:32 mark, scoring off a Steve Arce header. At 78:58, Bret Konley put the Spartans up by two when he converted after beating a 3-on-1 on a breakaway. Jordan Gruber knocked in MSU’s third goal with 17 seconds remaining from Paul Vance.%^$
%^$The Buckeyes outshot the Spartans, 14-11. Ohio State goalkeeper Kerry Thompson (Sr., Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) saw five shots on goal, recording two saves. MSU’s Mike Robinson recorded the shutout win with seven saves.%^$
%^$All but one of the six cautions issued in match came in the second half. Officials called 47 total fouls (25 on Ohio State ) and Michigan State’s Jonathan Wells was ejected at the same time as the third goal (89:43).%^$
%^$”It was a very difficult game for our guys,” John Bluem, OSU head coach, said. “It was an extrememly physical contest, it was difficult to play soccer because of the physical nature of the game. We’ll pick up the pieces, go back to work on Monday and see if we can’t get a better result Wednesday night.”%^$
%^$The No. 15 Buckeyes are on the road this week, taking on Cleveland State at 7 p.m. Wednesday. Ohio State returns to its home field, Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium, Sunday for a 2 p.m. contest with conference rival, No. 19 Penn State.%^$
