
Buckeyes Ready for Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State will find itself at one of the premier events on the early-season college softball calendar this weekend. The Buckeyes are headed west to Cathedral City, Calif. for the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic, where they have four games scheduled Friday-Sunday at Big League Dreams Sports Parks.

Briefly on the Buckeyes
- Ohio State is 3-5 after its first two weekends of non-conference play and has already played six games against teams that are either ranked or receiving votes in one of the national polls.
- The Buckeyes own wins over Boise State, UMass and an extra-innings walk-off victory last weekend against Notre Dame.
- Allison Smith has logged the most innings pitched thus far, checking in with 27.1 with four games started and five total appearances.
- She already has two double-digit strikeout games to her credit and has fanned 31 over her 27.1 innings.
- Ruck (10.0 innings) has started three games while Kay has logged 11.2 innings and was the winning pitcher against Notre Dame.
- Sophomore Kami Kortokrax has the top average on the team (.375) and also leads the Buckeyes with four doubles.
- Kortokrax is among a group of eight different players who have recorded an extra base hit through eight games.
Mary Nutter History
- This weekend will be Ohio State’s fifth trip to the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic under head coach Kelly Kovach Schoenly.
- The Buckeyes were there previously in 2013, 2015, 2017 and 2019.
- In their last appearances in Cathedral City, Ohio State went 4-0 with wins over Army, Duke, Utah and New Mexico State.
Scouting the Opposition
- CSUN, known formally as Cal State Northridge, is 5-5 on the season with wins over Memphis, Northern Illinois, Colorado State, Pacific and Cal Baptist.
- Oregon State, a Women’s College World Series participant last season, is 4-6 so far but coming off a 5-4 win over Grand Canyon in their most recent game.
- San Diego State is off to an 8-2 start and last weekend went 3-1 at home with their lone loss coming against No. 24 Oregon.
- Utah comes into the weekend with a 7-3 record and most recently played last weekend in the Tiger Classic on the campus of LSU where they went 2-3 with two wins over Ohio and losses to LSU (twice) and Central Arkansas.
California Dreamin’
- Ohio State has five California natives on its 2023 roster: Kaitlyn Farley (Encinitas, Calif.), Skylar Limon (La Habra, Calif.), Taylor Pack (Lakewood, Calif.), Mariah Rodriguez (Orange, Calif.) and Destinee Noury (Chula Vista, Calif.).
- This weekend’s trip will be the longest in the Buckeyes’ non-conference road schedule, as it covers over 2,000 miles and three time zones.
