COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State men’s soccer co-captains Kevin Nugent and Ray Burse Jr. received honors for their roles in leading the Buckeyes to a 1-0 win over Michigan last Friday. Nugent (Centerville, Ohio/Centerville) was named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week, while Burse (Prospect, Ky./St. Xavier) was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week.
On Senior Night, Nugent scored the game-winning goal in the 57th minute, marking his third game-winner of the season and seventh goal overall, while Burse had one save and directed the OSU defense to the shutout, his fourth of the season.
The win over the Wolverines gave the Buckeyes a runner-up finish in the Big Ten regular season standings and the No. 2 seed in this week’s Big Ten championship, hosted by Northwestern. Ohio State will face the host and seventh-seeded Wildcats in a quarterfinal match at 3:30 p.m. (EST) Thursday.
Nugent also leads the Buckeyes in points with 18 (seven goals, four assists) and owns five career game-winners. The shutout for Burse was the 12th of his career, giving him sole possession of fourth place in the OSU record book.
The national team of the week honor is the first for Nugent, while the Big Ten honor is the second this season for Burse and the fifth of his career.
