Ohio State Tops Akron in Qualifier



COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State pistol team faced Akron for a second time this season. The scores from this event are submitted as a qualification score for the national championship held in March. The Buckeyes came out on top by shooting an Open score of 6,728 compared to the Zips’ 5,866 tally. In the women’s only competition, Ohio State scored a 3,214.

School records were broken left and right. As a team, the Buckeyes’ 6,728 overall Open total is the highest in OSU history. The Open Standard team of Katelyn Abeln, Jack Leverett, Henry Leverett and Bernard Melus set a new all-time mark of 2,211. The women’s air team – Katelyn Abeln, Amanda Ackerman and Maria Tsarik – broke the program’s record with a score of 1,643.

  • The Buckeyes swept first through ninth place overall.
  • Ohio State claimed first through seventh place in sport pistol. Eight of the top 10 sport pistol shooters in the country are Buckeyes.
  • Henry Leverett finished first in sport and third in standard to come in third overall.
  • Jackson Leverett placed first overall after winning air and standard pistol.
  • Katelyn Abeln swept the competition in women’s overall, air and sport. She was also second in open air, sport, standard and 3-gun aggregate.
  • With nearly a complete set of personal bests, Maria Tsarik was second in women’s overall, air and sport.
  • All seven Buckeyes took first through seventh in standard pistol and first through eighth in open air pistol.
  • Nine of the top 10 air pistol shooters in the country are Buckeyes.
