Final Stats: Ohio State 6, Iowa 4 // Season Stats // 2022 Schedule & Results // 2022 Roster

COLUMBUS, Ohio For the second time in less than 24 hours, Ohio State used timely hitting and clutch late-game pitching to secure a 6-4 win over Iowa at Bob Pearl Field in Iowa City. The Buckeyes clinch the series over the Hawkeyes and will go for their third straight win in the finale tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. ET.

Ohio State is now 26-10 overall and 6-5 in Big Ten play. Iowa falls to 18-22, 1-12.

The Short Story
Ohio State scored three times in the top of the first inning – all coming with two outs – and never looked back. It built a 6-2 lead after six and a half innings and staved off a late Iowa rally as Ruck recorded the final three outs of the game for her first save of the season on a sac fly, strikeout and line out.

The winning pitcher was fellow sophomore Allison Smith, who went 6.0 innings and struck out five while allowing six hits. She improved to 7-2 on the season.

How The Runs Were Scored

  • Before Smith even had to throw a pitch, she had a 3-0 lead thanks to some two-out magic. It started with a two-RBI triple off the bat of McKenzie Bump, scoring Sam Hackenbracht and Jaycee Ruberti.
  • The next batter, freshman Kami Kortokrax, singled to center field, scoring Bump and putting Ohio State up 3-0.
  • Ohio State’s lead increased to 4-0 early in the second inning as Taylor Pack hit her first career home run – a solo shot to center field.
  • Iowa was able to get two runs back in the bottom half of the inning, but Smith and the Ohio State defense kept Iowa off the scoreboard for the next four innings.
  • A fielder’s choice RBI in the fifth inning and sacrifice fly from Kortokrax gave the Buckeyes a 6-2 leaded headed into the home half of the seventh inning.
  • The first two batters in the bottom of the seventh walked for Iowa, and an RBI single that followed made the score 6-3 in favor of Ohio State.
  • Following a sacrifice fly to make the score 6-4, Ruck recorded the final two outs on a strikeouts and line out to shortstop.
