
Ohio State Drops Season Opener at No. 19/21 South Carolina

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Ohio State softball team came up short on Friday afternoon to No. 19/21 South Carolina, 3-2, in its 2020 season opener at Carolina Softball Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Gamecocks opened the scoring in the bottom of the second on a two-run homer by Katie Prebble. They extended their lead to 3-0 after an Ohio State error allowed a run to come in.
Meg Otte got the Buckeyes in the game and cut the deficit to one in the fifth on an inside-the-park two-run homer, the first of the season.
Ohio State had another chance to score in the sixth with a pair of runners in scoring position but could not bring them home.
RHP Payton Buresch earned her first start of her Buckeye career in the circle. She allowed six hits and three runs (two earned) with four strikeouts over six innings.
BUCKEYE BITS
- Meg Otte connected on the third home run of her career.
- Avery Clark and Niki Carver both went 2-for-3 at the plate.
- Ashley Prange, Kaitlyn Coffman and Carley Gaskill each had one hit.
- The Buckeyes out-hit the Gamecocks, 8-6.
- Ohio State retired six straight South Carolina players over the third and fourth innings.
- The Buckeyes are 5-1 in their season opener over the last six years.
UP NEXT
Ohio State continues play at the Carolina Classic with a pair of games on Saturday. The Buckeyes will face North Dakota State at 12:30 p.m. before taking on Southern Illinois at 5:30 p.m.
