COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s volleyball team (3-2) captured its second-consecutive victory Friday as the Buckeyes upended the Saints of Maryville University (1-1), 3-0 (25-13, 25-18, 25-18).

Key Players 

Shane Wetzel – The Buckeye first-year player notched a double-digit kill performance, finishing the evening with 11 while hitting .333. He also added five digs and a pair of service aces.

Jack O’Riordan – O’Riordan sparked the Buckeyes serving effort, finishing the match with five of the team’s 13 service aces. He also added six kills and a team-high seven digs.

Michael Wright – The Buckeye’s setter was efficient throughout the match, posting 28 assists in the straight-set sweep. He also added four digs and three blocks.

How it Happened 

Set 1 

Ohio State controlled the opening game, running out to a 7-2 lead and never looking back as they dominated the set, 25-13. Jacob Pasteur led the way for the Buckeyes in the run that forced the Saints’ first timeout, putting together three points, including a pair of service aces. Shane Wetzel also keyed the offensive run with three early kills. Overall in the opening set, the Buckeyes tallied six service aces. They also limited the Saints’ chances, posting a sideout percentage of 84% (11-of-13).

Set 2 

While the defense held down the fort for the opening game, the offense came alive in set two, as the Buckeyes hit .429 in the game. Ohio State found themselves leading 13-8 through the first half of the middle game, following a solo block by Pasteur. From there, however, the Saints would respond with a 7-2 run with the help of six Buckeye errors, tying the set at 15-15.

Ohio State would respond with a 10-3 run to capture the middle game. A 4-0 swing, punctuated by a kill from Jack O’Riordan, would give the Buckeyes control (19-15). Kyle Teune gave Ohio State their largest lead of the set (24-17) and Wetzel would finish the Saints off with a kill, 25-18. Wetzel was strong in the set, putting together five kills to lead the way.


The service line played in favor of the Buckeyes in the deciding set, as Ohio State notched five service aces, including four by O’Riordan, to capture the third game, 25-18. The hosts ran their lead out to six (13-7) midway through the set as O’Riordan tallied back-to-back aces. He finished the set with four. The Saints would close the gap to within three but could get no closer as the Buckeyes grabbed their second, three-set sweep of the season.

The Buckeyes continue their four-game home stand as they play host to the Miners of Missouri S&T Saturday. The matchup at the Covelli Center is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
