
No. 12 Buckeyes Drop Match to Georgia Tech

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 12 Ohio State women's tennis team lost to No. 22 Georgia Tech, 4-1, in the ITA National Team Indoor Championship Round of 16 Friday in Chicago. The Buckeyes, the tournament's No. 8 seed, are now 3-1 this season, with Georgia Tech improving to 9-2.
Ohio State is slated for two more matches in Chicago. The team will compete against No. 10 Michigan at 6:30 p.m. ET Saturday in consolation action. The Wolverines fell to No. 1 seed Stanford in their round of 16 match.
The Buckeyes trailed the Yellow Jackets 2-0 after losing the doubles point and first singles match. Kolie Allen put the Buckeyes on the board for a 2-1 match. The Yellow Jackets captured the next two matches, with a three-set victory on court six and second-set tiebreaker win on court two, to advance.
Quoting Coach Melissa Schaub
"It wasn't our best day today, but the best thing about getting to this tournament is that you get another two tough matches. We are a good team and we'll need to respond well tomorrow after a tough loss like this."
In Doubles
The teams split in doubles on courts two and three.
The Buckeye tandem of Shiori Fukuda and Irina Cantos Siemers took the early lead and topped Monika Dedaj and Rosie Garcia Gross on court two, dropping just two games. On court three, the Yellow Jacket duo of Gia Cohen and Nami Otsuka defeated Kathleen Jones and Danielle Wolf.
On court one, Georgia Tech's No. 37-ranked Kenya Jones and Victoria Flores won 6-4 over Kolie Allen and Isabelle Boulais, breaking and serving out the match, to capture the doubles point and give Georgia Tech the early lead.
In Singles
Georgia Tech took a 2-0 lead after a court one win, with No. 64 Jones topping No. 8 Fukuda, 6-1, 6-4. On court four, Allen defeated Otsuka in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2, to put the Buckeyes on the board.
The Yellow Jackets rallied for a win on court six, with Nadia Gizdova posting a three-set victory over Jones, for a 3-1 advantage. No. 49-ranked Flores clinched the team win, as she topped No. 99 Wolf, 6-3, 7-6 (6).
