
No. 10 Ohio State Drops Close Match at No. 8 NC State, 4-3

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 10 Ohio State women's tennis team dropped a second straight road match to a Top 10 opponent 4-3, falling at No. 8 North Carolina State Sunday in Raleigh, N.C. The matches this weekend opened the Buckeyes' 2022 dual match slate. Ohio State played at No. 6 Duke Friday.
The Wolfpack (2-0) won the doubles point and the first singles match before Ohio State tied the match with three-set wins from Isabelle Boulais and Sydni Ratliff. NCSU took the next match but Buckeye Irina Cantos Siemers won a battle of Top 10 players in three sets to deadlock the team score at three-all. The match, which took nearly five hours, was decided on court six, where the Wolfpack player won in straight sets.
In Doubles
- NC State claimed the doubles point with wins on courts two and three.
- The duo of Sara Nayar and Priska Nugroho won 6-2 over Buckeyes Irina Cantos Siemers and Madeline Atway. Jaeda Daniel and Nell Miller clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 victory over Sydni Ratliff and Kathleen Jones.
- The match on court one between Buckeyes Isabelle Boulais and Kolie Allen and Amelia Rajecki and Abigail Rencheli was suspended tied at five.
In Singles
- The Wolfpack facility has four indoor courts, with matches at Nos. 1-4 starting and then No. 5 and No. 6 following as courts cleared.
- The Wolfpack pushed the lead to 2-0 when Nelli Miller topped No. 72 Lucia Marzal, 6-2, 6-1, on court four.
- The Buckeyes won the next two matches, prevailing in three sets on courts two and three.
- Isabelle Boulais notched a second straight win over a Top 30 player, as she defeated No. 25 Abigail Rencheli, 7-6, 1-6, 6-0, on court two. Boulais was down a break in the first set but came back to take the set in a tiebreak.
- On court three freshman and No. 123-ranked Sydni Ratliff was a 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 winner against Priska Nugroho to tie the match at two.
- The Wolfpack went ahead 3-2 after a straight-set win by Sophie Abrams over Kolie Allen on court five.
- In a matchup of Top 10 singles players on court one, No. 6 Irina Cantos Siemers of Ohio State took on No. 8 Jaeda Daniel. They split the first two sets, with Cantos Siemers winning the first 6-2 and Daniel tying the match with a 6-3 set two victory. Daniel rallied from down 3-5 in the third set and it eventually went to a tiebreaker, where the Buckeye rolled, shutting out Daniel 7-0, to win the match and tie the team score.
- On court six, Buckeye freshman Shelly Bereznyak, in her first collegiate dual match, faced Amelia Rajecki. The Buckeye battled back from down a break and forced a tiebreaker in the first set but lost, 7-5, to drop the first set. In the second set, Rajecki won the final four points for the match victory and team win.
The Schedule Ahead
- Ohio State will host ITA Kickoff Weekend matches Saturday and Sunday. The Buckeyes will take on Oklahoma State in the first round at 10 a.m., with LSU and Tennessee meeting in the other match at 1 p.m. The winners (1 p.m.) and losers (10 a.m.) will meet on day two, with the site winner advancing to ITA National Team Indoor Championship.
