No. 1 Ohio State falls to No. 28 Texas A&M

COLLEGE STATION, TX. – The Ohio State men’s tennis team suffered their first defeat of 2019 on Monday evening, losing to the Aggies 4-3.
Ohio State took the match lead 1-0 through doubles play thank to performaces from Martin Joyce, Kyle Seelig, James Trotter and Alex Kobelt. Due to some lineup changes, the tandem of Alex Kobelt and James Trotter were reunited. The pair werevictorious, winning their match 6-4 over Aguilar/Smith. The Buckeyes are yet to lose the doubles point in 2019. They have started with a 1-0 advantage in each of their 17 matches.
However, it was singles play where the Aggies took control of the match and never looked back. The Buckeyes either trailed or were tied in all six matches through two sets. The Buckeyes trailed 1-3 before Barnaby Smith of A&M clinched the match victory. No. 27 John McNally and Hunter Tubert would pick up late wins, but it would be too late. The Buckeyes were without No. 1 JJ Wolf for the match, but will look to regroup at full strength when they take on the Texas Longhorns later this week.
Ohio State’s loss to Texas A&M is their first defeat since May of last year when they were national runner-up, and just their fourth loss over their last 54 matches dating back to the start of the 2017-18 season.
Ohio State dropped its first match of the season to go 16-1 and will look to get back on track with a match against No. 3 Texas on Thursday.
