No. 1 Buckeyes Down No. 6 Colgate, 6-2

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 1 Ohio State women’s hockey team kicked off the holiday weekend with a 6-2 win over No. 6 Colgate Wednesday evening at the OSU Ice Rink. The Buckeyes (13-1-2, 12-1-1 WCHA) finished 1-0-1 against the Raiders (13-1-2, 4-1-0 ECAC) in the team’s first nonconference action of the season.

How it Happened

After not finishing on a single power play opportunity in game one of the series, Ohio State opened the Wednesday’s game with four straight power play goals.

Sophie Jaques, who leads the nation in power play scoring, tallied the Buckeyes’ first at 12:06 into the game. Kenzie Hauswirth and Jenn Gardiner added assists to give Ohio State the lead.

At 12:15 in the first period, Colgate’s Kristyna Kaltounková was issued a major penalty for contact to the head, putting Ohio State on the power play for five minutes. During that time, Emma Maltais and Jenna Buglioni scored within 30 seconds of one another to bring the Buckeyes’ lead to 3-0. Buglioni and Maltais each earned a helper on each other’s goals while Paetyn Levis added the second assist on Maltais’.

After killing off a penalty to start the second period, Ohio State capitalized on its fourth straight power play opportunity. This time, Levis sent the puck past Colgate’s Kayla Osborne with assists by Hauswirth and Maltais.

The Buckeyes’ scoring spree was halted by the Raiders at 12:16 in the second period with a goal from Kaitlyn O’Donohoe. Colgate added a second goal at 14:01 from Danielle Serdachny in the second to cut Ohio State’s lead to two goals.

Jaques scored her second goal of the day, and the final goal of the game, at 14:09 in the third period to give the Buckeyes’ a 6-2 lead. Gardiner recorded the assist on the play.

Ohio State goaltender Raygan Kirk made 30 stops in the game, including a couple without a stick. She held the Raiders scoreless in the first and third periods, making 11 and nine saves, respectively.

  • Raygan Kirk made a season-high 30 saves on the day. She improves her record to 4-0-1 this year with the win.
  • Jenn Gardiner and Emma Maltais led the team with three points in the game. Both players recorded a goal and two assists against Colgate.
  • Sophie Jaques paced the team with two goals on the day. She has now tallied seven power play goals on the year and 15 goals overall.
  • With the win, Ohio State improves to 3-1-2 in the all-time series against Colgate.
  • Today’s game was the final home contest of 2022. The Buckeyes finished 16-3-2 during the 2022 calendar year at the OSU Ice Rink.
  • The Buckeyes’ four power play goals is the most recorded by a WCHA team in a single game this season. The total is also just one short of the program record for single game power play goals.
  • With two points on the weekend, Paetyn Levis is now two just points shy of 100 for her career.
  • The Buckeyes improve to 3-1-2 against ranked opponents this season with the win and tie against No. 6 Colgate.
