Johnson most recently spent the past three seasons at Miami (FL).
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women's volleyball team and head coach Jen Flynn Oldenburg announced the addition of Eric Johnson to the coaching staff on Thursday. Johnson will serve as an assistant coach.
"We are excited to welcome Eric Johnson to Buckeye Nation," Oldenburg said. "While Eric's experience stood out to me in this hiring process, his ability to communicate, eagerness for more and fundamental beliefs of what is important made him a great fit for our program. I am fired up for Eric to get started as a Buckeye!"
Johnson served as an assistant coach at Miami (FL) the past three seasons, during which the Hurricanes went 67-29 overall and made three NCAA Tournament appearances, advancing to the second round in each appearance. He helped coach a trio of student-athletes to five AVCA All-American selections and five student-athletes to eight AVCA All-Region selections. Johnson coaches six future professional players in addition to Ariana Rodriguez, a 2024 Paris Olympian for the Dominican Republic. Johnson also helped the student-athletes to 39 academic accolades during the three years. The Hurricanes ranked as high as No. 13 in the AVCA poll in 2025.
"I am incredibly humbled and honored to join the Ohio State women's volleyball program," Johnson said. "I want to thank Jen Flynn Oldenburg and everyone in the program for allowing me to have this amazing opportunity. I hope to contribute positively to each student-athlete's college experience and help make their time at OSU the best years of their lives. This tremendous university provides everything needed to develop successful people on and off the court, both now and after graduation. I couldn't be more grateful to be here and am so excited to be a Buckeye!"
Johnson previously served as an assistant coach at American for two seasons (2021, 2022) and spent the four seasons prior at George Mason. In addition to his time at George Mason, Johnson coached junior club teams in the greater Washington D.C. area. A native of Tustin, California, Johnson spent a decade as a player and coach with the Balboa Bay Volleyball Club, winning the 15 Open USAV National Championship in 2009. He is also captured a pair of bronze medals (2008, 2010) at the USA Volleyball Open.
Johnson's playing career stems from Division III's Springfield College, where he won NCAA National Championships in the 2013 and 2014 seasons and was a four-time NCAA finalist. The team captain graduated from Springfield in 2016 with a bachelor's degree in sports management while representing Team USA at the 2013 World University Games in Kazan, Russia.
