COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State freshman forward Hilda Svennson was named the 2026 Julia Chu Rookie of the Year by the Hockey Commissioners Association Thursday. Svensson shares the award with Clarkson freshman Sara Manness.
Svensson is the second Buckeye to earn the national rookie of the year award, which was first awarded in 2014. She is also the team's second recipient in three years, following 2024 award winner Joy Dunne.
As a freshman, Svensson leads the No. 1 Buckeyes with 50 points and 32 assists in 31 games played this season. She leads rookies nationally with 1.61 points per game and 1.03 assists per game and is second by just .02 in goals per game (.58).
The Oskarshamn, Sweden native also earned the WCHA Rookie of the Year award, becoming the fifth Buckeye
Svensson, an All-WCHA Third Team and WCHA All-Rookie Team honoree, has tallied a point in all but five games she has played in this season. She has had a huge impact for the team on special teams, leading the team with 14 points on the power play, scoring the team's lone shorthanded goal and scoring both of the Buckeyes' penalty shot opportunities this year.
In addition to her success in her first collegiate season, she also played in her first Olympic Games this year, missing eight games of the regular season and skating in seven games in Milan with Team Sweden. In her Olympic debut, Svensson recorded a team-high seven points and six assists to help the team to its first Olympic semifinal appearance since 2014.
In addition to the postseason awards, Svensson earned five WCHA Rookie of the Week awards, was twice named league rookie of the month and earned Hockey Commissioners Association Rookie of the Month honors in the first month of her collegiate career.
