
Buckeyes Sweep Saint Louis on Opening Weekend

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The Ohio State baseball team (3-0) opened the season 3-0 for the first time since 2022, winning both games of a doubleheader against Saint Louis (0-3) on Saturday at Blue Wahoos Stadium to complete the series sweep.
It's the first opening weekend series sweep for Ohio State since 2019, when the Buckeyes won three against Seton Hall at the Snowbird Classic Feb. 15-17. The Buckeyes last swept a three-game series in 2023, defeating rival Michigan three times to close out the regular season May 18-20.

- Lee Ellis singled through the left side to lead off the bottom of the first inning for the Buckeyes and a single from Henry Kaczmar sent Ellis to third. Ellis was sent home a sacrifice fly from Mason Eckelman to give Ohio State the early 1-0 lead.
- Noah Furcht led off the bottom of the second with a double to center field, and he advanced to third on an Alex Bemis groundout. A single to right center from Miles Vandenheuvel scored Furcht and put the Buckeyes ahead, 2-0.
- A solo home run from the Billikens in the top of the third halved the Buckeyes' lead, 2-1, and an RBI single from Saint Louis in the top of the fourth tied the score, 2-2.
- Both teams went scoreless until the bottom of the seventh. Furcht walked to lead off the inning, followed by a single from Bemis. Another RBI single from Vandenheuvel broke the tie and put Ohio State back in the lead, 3-2.
- The Billikens were retired in order in the top of the eighth and ninth to secure the 3-2 victory for the Buckeyes.
- Vandenheuvel led the Buckeyes with two hits and two RBIs.
- Chris Domke (1-0) earned the win on the mound, striking out a career-high five batters and allowing just one hit in 3.0 scoreless innings.
- Starter Pierce Herrenbruck struck out four and allowed two runs on three hits in a 4.0-inning no-decision.
- Freshman Owen Graf struck out four and gave up just two hits in 2.0 innings of relief.

- Ellis walked to lead off the bottom of the first and then stole second. Kaczmar walked and the two Buckeyes executed a double steal to get into scoring position. An RBI groundout from CJ Reid scored Ellis to put the Buckeyes on the board first, 1-0.
- Eckelman tripled down the right field line to lead off the bottom of the third inning. A single to left field from Gavin West scored Eckelman and put the Buckeyes ahead, 2-0.
- Saint Louis got on the board in the top of the fifth with a lead-off solo home run to cut the Ohio State lead in half, 2-1.
- Walks from Kaczmar and Maddix Simpson in the bottom of the fifth put two runners on with one out. Reid scored Kaczmar on an RBI double and Furcht scored Simpson on an RBI groundout. A single from Grant Mangrum sent Reid home and put Ohio State ahead by four, 5-1.
- Vandenheuvel scored on a Saint Louis error in the bottom of sixth to give the Buckeyes a 6-1 lead.
- Two bases-loaded walks in the top of the seventh inning put the Billikens within striking distance of the Buckeyes, 6-3.
- In the top of the eighth, reliever Andrew Edrington struck out the side, catching two Billikens looking and one swinging.
- Ellis led off the bottom of the eighth with a triple to right field. Eckelman drove in Ellis on a single through the left side to put Ohio State ahead by four, 7-3.
- In the top of the ninth with bases loaded and the tying run at the plate, Douglas Bauer came in for the Buckeyes, getting the final out to earn the save and secure the 7-3 Ohio State victory.
- Eckelman and Vandenheuvel led the Buckeyes with two hits each.
- Reid had a team-high two RBIs.
- Ellis led the Buckeyes with two stolen bases.
- Freshman Jude Fisher (1-0) earned his first collegiate win. He struck out four and allowed one run on four hits in 5.0 innings pitched.
- Edrington struck out a career-high four and allowed one hit in 2.0 innings of work.
- Bauer earned the first save of the season for the Buckeyes.
- The Buckeyes travel to Memphis, Tenn., to play in the Grid City Classic Feb. 20-22. Ohio State will play two games against Memphis and two games against Louisiana Tech.
