Buckeyes finish Kirin Kumar's first season with a 45-14-1 record
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Ohio State's memorable 2025 season and its run in the Knoxville Regional came to a close on Sunday afternoon, as the Lady Vols scored five runs over the final two innings of a 5-0 decision at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium.
The Buckeyes' season concludes with a 45-14-1 overall record – it's most wins in a season since 2009. Tennessee, meanwhile, advances to the Super Regionals where they will host the winner of the Baton Rouge Regional.
Tennessee broke a scoreless tie in the top of the sixth inning thanks to a two-run home run down the left field line and a two-out double. The Vols added to important insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning via a solo home run and RBI double to right field.
In the circle, fourth-year junior Kennedy Kay was superb. She allowed zero earned runs over seven innings and walked only one batter. Kay was excellent all weekend, going seven innings yesterday against Tennessee and then turning around 24 hours later to styme a UT offense that hit .200 with runners on base today.
At the plate, the Buckeyes faced Tennessee's Sage Mardjetko, who limited Ohio State to just two hits. Once the Lady Vols took a 2-0 lead in the top of the sixth, Karlyn Pickens worked the final two innings and allowed just one base runner via a hit batter.
The 2025 Buckeyes not only won 45 games and advanced to a regional final, they did so in a historic way. Ohio State set a program and Big Ten record with 147 home runs. Four different players hit 20 or more, led by sophomore Jasmyn Burns, who established a new program and Big Ten record with 25 long balls. The Buckeyes also led the nation in runs scored (495), slugging percentage (.709), home runs per game (2.45) and runs per game (8.25). They had 21 run-rule wins and 23 games with three or more home runs.
Three seniors – Kami Kortokrax, Kaitlyn Farley and Morgan Frye – played their final games in scarlet and gray on Sunday. Both Kortokrax and Farley saw over 200 games of career action while Frye, in her lone season with the Buckeyes, hit .373 with 12 home runs and 38 RBI.
