Wetzel earns 1,000th career kill in win

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- No. 3 seed Ohio State (17-10) advanced to the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Tournament Semifinals with a 3-1 win over No. 6 Lindenwood (14-11) Saturday at the Covelli Center.

The Buckeyes will next face No. 2 McKendree Wednesday (8 p.m. ET) in Lebanon, Illinois. Gametime is to be announced. The Bearcats defeated No. 7 Purdue Fort Wayne 3-0 Saturday. Â

Against the Lions, Ohio State won by scores of 25-15, 25-23, 24-26, 25-14.

First Team All-MIVA Shane Wetzel reached 1,000 career kills with 16 in the win to lead both teams. Wetzel also added a game-high 11 digs.
Â
Freshman Stanislaw Chacinski, a MIVA first teamer and league newcomer of the year finished with 11 kills, tied with senior Kyle Teune.

Setter Daniel Henwood Rodriguez, a second team All-MIVA honoree, paced the Buckeyes with 41 assists.

How it Happened
Set 1 (OSU, 25-15)
The first set started back-and-forth until a 5-0 Ohio State run capped by a Shane Wetzel kill gave the Buckeyes a 9-5 advantage. A Kyle Teune kill made it 12-6, forcing the Lions into their first timeout. After the break, a Stanislaw Chacinski kill brought Ohio State's lead to 13-7. A 3-2 run by the Scarlet and Gray made it 16-9, but Lindenwood answered, scoring three-consecutive points to force Ohio State into its first timeout. Three kills and a Lindenwood error gave the Buckeyes a 19-13 lead after the huddle. A Lion kill made it 19-14, but the Buckeyes answered with the next three points to bring their advantage to 22-14. A Chacinski kill put Ohio State on top 23-15. Another kill from Teune and an ace from Wetzel closed the set 25-15 to give the Buckeyes a 1-0 lead in the match. Wetzel led the Ohio State offense with seven kills on eight swings with Chacinski following with four kills.

Set 3 (LIN, 26-24)Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â
Both teams went point-for-point to start the third set. After a tie at 3-all, a Leahey kill and a block from Wetzel, Chacinski and Leahey gave the Buckeyes a 5-3 advantage. A pair of Teune kills brought the lead to 8-5. The Lions brought it back within one at 8-7, but kills from Wetzel and Daniel Henwood-Rodriguez extended Ohio State's lead to 10-7, forcing a Lindenwood timeout. After the break, the Buckeyes went on a 4-3 run to take a 14-10 advantage. The Lions cut the lead to 14-13, but a 3-1 run from Ohio State, capped by a kill from Leahey, forced Lindenwood into a timeout at 17-14. Coming out of the huddle, the Scarlet and Gray took a 19-16 lead following a Lindenwood service error. Back-to-back aces from Wetzel extended the lead to 21-16. The Lions came back to make it 22-19, and Ohio State took a timeout. After the break, the Lions scored consecutively, forcing Ohio State into another timeout at 22-21. A Teune kill gave the Buckeyes a 23-22 lead. After a tie at 23-all, the Lions went on a 3-1 run to take the set 26-24 and force a fourth set.

Set 4 (OSU, 25-14)
A pair of kills from Teune, one from Chacinski and an ace from Wetzel gave the Buckeyes a 4-0 start to the fourth set, forcing Lindenwood into an early timeout. Ohio State kept going after the break, taking a 6-1 lead thanks to a kill from Young. Three consecutive kills from Chacinski gave Ohio state a 9-1 advantage, forcing the Lions into taking their second and final timeout. A Lindenwood block stopped the run at 10-2. A 5-1 run capped with an ace from Henwood-Rodriguez extended the lead to 15-3. A Lion service error made it 17-5. Lindenwood scored three-consecutive points to bring the score to 17-8. More attack errors from Lindenwood gave the Buckeyes a 21-9 advantage. Kills from Wetzel and Owen Pickering brought the score to 23-10. A kill from Kohl Kutsch gave Ohio State match point, and a Lindenwood service error finished the set 25-14 and gave the Buckeyes the match 3-1.
