Box Score
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 6 Ohio State men's lacrosse team is the Big Ten champion for the first time in program history. The Buckeyes (12-2, 4-1 B1G) overcame a three-goal deficit in the fourth quarter to defeat No. 12 Michigan, 10-8, Saturday at U-M Lacrosse Stadium in Ann Arbor, Mich. for the conference crown.
The regular season conference title is the program's first since 2014, when the team tied for first in the ECAC. The team has now won 13 conference titles in program history. The league title is head coach Nick Myers' second at the helm of the Buckeyes.
In addition to securing the Big Ten title, Saturday's victory also brings the Creator's Trophy back to Columbus for the first time since 2022. The team earned a 2-0 record in the season series against Michigan and Penn State for its fourth win all-time in the trophy's 14-year history.
How it Happened
After falling behind 8-5 with 12:01 to play in the game, Ohio State scored five unanswered goals in the final five and a half minutes to come away with the 10-8 victory. From the time Michigan recorded its final goal of the game, Gannon Matthews tallied a hat trick and Caleb Fyock made two saves, Jonny Cool caused two turnovers and the team picked up six ground balls to hold off the Wolverines.
The opening minutes of the game showed off the defensive battle that was to come. It took 11 minutes for the first goal to be scored as Fyock started the day with four saves and the Buckeye defense forced two turnovers in the stretch.
Michigan was ultimately first on the board, scoring at 4:07 for the 1-0 lead. Ohio State responded with a goal from Garrett Haas with under two minutes on the clock to even the game at 1-1 after the first quarter.
Ohio State outscored the Wolverines, 2-1, in the second to take the one-goal advantage into the half. Haas gave the Buckeyes their first lead of the day with a goal at 6:07. A Michigan goal at 4:31 was quickly countered by Ben Mayer, who scored at 3:50 for the final tally of the half. Fyock added a save and the Buckeyes grabbed 11 ground balls in the second quarter.
Ed Shean got the team started quick in the second half, scoring just eight seconds into the third quarter to increase the Buckeye lead to 5-3. Ohio State's momentum was halted there as Michigan went on a 6-1 scoring run from 11:58 in the third to 12:01 in the fourth to regain the lead and take an 8-5 advantage three minutes into the final frame.
With two of the team's competitive goals on the line, Ohio State was not to be counted out. In addition to Matthew's hat trick, the Buckeyes' five-goal scoring run to close the game included Shean's second goal of the game and Shane O'Leary's first goal in three games.
Buckeye faceoff specialist Jack Oldman finished the day 12-for-20 for his second league game of the year over 50 percent from the faceoff X. He grabbed seven of the team's 30 ground balls.
Fyock made 12 saves on Saturday to improve to 4-1 in Big Ten play. He and the Buckeye defense allowed just eight goals, marking the first time in conference play and the eighth time this season Ohio State has kept an opponent to single digit scoring.
Matthews led the team with three goals, all scored in the five-goal run to close the game, while Haas and Shean added two goals apiece. Haas tied with Matthews for a team-high three points.
The win is Ohio State's first over Michigan since 2022 and the first for the Buckeyes in Ann Arbor since 2021.
