Buckeyes Fall to Minnesota in Series Finale

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State baseball team (8-24, 2-13 Big Ten) dropped game three in its series against Minnesota (16-17, 5-10 Big Ten), 6-4, on Sunday.

Game Recap

In the bottom of the first inning, the Buckeyes started off hot with a leadoff single from Trey Lipsey and a 396-foot home run by Lee Ellis. Then with two outs, Mason Eckelman doubled to right center and was sent home after a single to left center from Nick Giamarusti to put the Buckeyes up 3-0.
Tyler Pettorini walked to start off the bottom of the second inning. Eckelman doubled to left field, putting both runners in scoring position, but both were left on base.
Minnesota scored two in the top of the fourth to cut the Buckeye lead to one, 3-2.
With two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning, Ellis was hit by a pitch, Pettorini hit a single to center field, putting runners at the corners, but they were left there.
In the bottom of the fifth, Eckelman was hit by a pitch, Giamarusti walked to put runners at first and second. Will Carpenter laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners into scoring position. With the bases loaded after Reggie Bussey walked, Lipsey was also walked to plate Eckelman and give the Buckeyes a two-run lead, 4-2.
The Golden Gophers hit back-to-back RBI doubles in the top of the sixth to even the score, 4-4
Minnesota added a run after a solo home run to take the lead, 5-4, in the top of the eighth inning.
In the top of the ninth, Minnesota plated another run after an RBI single to extend their lead to two, 6-4.
The Buckeyes were retired in order in the bottom of the ninth as the Golden Gophers came away with the win and the series sweep.

Buckeyes by the Numbers

Eckelman led the Buckeyes with two hits.
Ellis had a team-high two RBIs.
Starter Jake Michalak fanned four and allowed two runs on three hits in a 4.2-inning no-decision.
Luke Carrell (0-2) took the loss on the mound. He struck out four and gave up two runs on three hits in 2.1 innings pitched.
