Buckeyes top Oakland 10-2 and Merrimack 17-1
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The hot-hitting Ohio State softball team changed scenery on Friday, playing its first two home games of the 2025 season, and continued to do what it does best: score runs and hit home runs. The Buckeyes (15-4-1) defeated Oakland, 10-2, and Merrimack, 17-1, and totaled seven home runs and 14 extra base hits in the two games.
Reagan Milliken was the offensive star of the first game, going two for three with two home runs and six RBI. It was her second multi-home run game of the season. In the nightcap against Merrimack, the Buckeyes scored 10 runs in the first inning as eight starters had at least one hit. Freshman Lorin Boutte was the winning pitcher against Oakland while Kassandra Gewecke improved to 2-0 by pitching five innings vs. Merrimack.
The Short Story
The Buckeyes broke the Oakland game open with three runs in the first inning, two in the third and five more in the fourth. In addition to Milliken's two homers – which give her eight long-balls on the season – Hadley Parisien, Jasmyn Burns, Morgan Frye and Taylor Cruse also went deep. The six homers was just one shy of tying the single-game school record, which was set two weeks ago in a 15-0 five-inning win over Cornell.
Boutte was sharp in the circle, going four innings while allowing just two hits and one earned run while striking out five batters to improve to 8-2 on the season.
The Buckeyes' 10-run first inning against Merrimack included Cadyn Ruffer's two-run RBI triple to center field as well as run-scoring hits by Kami Kortokrax, Kaitlyn Farley, Milliken and Parisien, who homered to center field. It was Ohio State's 13th consecutive game with at least one home run.
In the second inning, the Buckeyes added seven more runs on three hits and two Merrimack errors. That was plenty of run support for Gewecke, who scattered five hits over five innings with three strikeouts and two walks.
