COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 3 Ohio State men's lacrosse team improved to 2-0 in Big Ten Conference play with a 13-11 win over Rutgers Saturday at Ohio State Lacrosse Stadium. The Buckeyes are now 10-1 on the year with 10 straight wins as the Scarlet Knights fall to 5-6 overall and 1-1 in conference matchups.
The Short Story
Ohio State returned to home turf for the first time in four weeks and earned its third straight win in the series against Rutgers in front of a crowd of 2,534 strong.
Prior to the game, the program recognized 18 seniors and it was senior leadership that was key in the win for the Buckeyes.
Senior Jack McKenna had his best game as a Buckeye, finishing the day with two goals and three assists for a team-high five points against the Scarlet Knights. Alex Marinier recorded his seventh hat trick of the year with three goals and Ryan Donnery, Gannon Matthews and Ed Shean each tallied two goals on their senior day.
Caleb Fyock made a career-high 19 saves in goal for the Buckeyes to improve to 10-0 in his sophomore season. He added three ground balls on the day. The Buckeye defensive effort caused 10 turnovers and held the Scarlet Knights scoreless on two extra man opportunities.

How it Happened
- Ohio State jumped out to its first of three leads of the day with a 3-0 run to open the game. McKenna scored the first goal of the game at 13:43 and Garrett Haas (9:44) and Donnery (9:34) added a pair of goals 10 seconds apart to increase the Buckeye advantage.
- Rutgers answered with its own three-goal run, scoring the final goal of the first quarter and the first two of the second to tie the game at 3-3.
- Ohio State's first tallies of the quarter were scored by Shean (8:01) and Liam White (7:09) with the pair of goals giving the Buckeyes a 5-3 lead.
- A Scarlet Knight goal at 6:10 halted the Buckeyes' momentum, but Marinier, Ohio State's leading scorer, tallied his first goal of the day with 2:23 to play in the half to restore Ohio State's two-goal lead.
- Ohio State held the 6-5 advantage at halftime after Rutgers found the back of the net with with 39 seconds remaining in the second quarter.
- After scoring off the opening faceoff of the second half to even the game at 6-6, the Scarlet Knights were held scoreless for nearly 12 minutes, only recording two goals in the third stanza with the second coming at 3:01. Fyock made five saves in the frame for the Buckeyes.
- Marinier and McKenna each scored their second goals of the day in the third quarter with consecutive goals for the Buckeyes at 12:10 and 4:54, respectively, to put Ohio State back in front. Marinier completed his hat trick with the last goal of the quarter with 1:41 on the clock for the 9-7 Ohio State advantage.
- Both teams scored four times in the fourth quarter. Ed Shean's goal at 13:39 gave Ohio State the 10-7 lead, the largest of the day.
- Rutgers recorded two goals within a minute to come within one goal of the Buckeyes, but Gannon Matthews and Donnery helped the Buckeyes take back the three-goal advantage with goals at 10:15 and 7:07.
- The Scarlet Knights went on to score twice more and Matthews added his second of the day at 1:47 for the final 13-11 score.
- Fyock made eight saves in the final frame to hold off the Rutgers comeback.
