Buckeyes Upset No. 10 Oregon, Sweep Doubleheader

The Buckeyes were 0-7 in conference play going into the day, but an 11-10 win in game one and an 8-6 win in game two gave them their first conference victories of the season. They are also the first Big Ten wins for head coach Justin Haire. The Buckeyes have defeated two ranked opponents this season, with the first win of 2025 coming against No. 12 NC State.
Game 1: Ohio State 11, Oregon 10
Game Recap
- Oregon got off to an early 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning after scoring on a sac fly and a three-run home run.
- In the bottom of the first, Trey Lipsey led off with a double to right center. A groundout from Lee Ellis advanced Lipsey to third base and he scored on a sac fly from Tyler Pettorini to cut the Duck lead to three, 4-1.
- With one out in the bottom of the second, Matthew Graveline tripled to right field. Graveline crossed home on a sac fly from Reggie Bussey. Sal Mineo was then walked. Maddix Simpson stepped up to the plate next, and he sent his first career home run 400 feet over the wall in left field to tie the score, 4-4.
- Oregon reclaimed the lead in the top of the third inning, 7-4, after a three-run home run.
- Ellis and Pettorini hit back-to-back singles to lead off the bottom of the third. Ryan Miller was then hit by a pitch to load the bases. Mason Eckelman reached on a fielder's choice and Ellis scored to put the Buckeyes within two runs of the Ducks, 7-5.
- In the bottom of the fourth, Simpson reached on a fielder's choice and Lipsey was hit by a pitch to put two runners on. A single into left center from Ellis cut the Oregon lead to one run, 7-6.
- A two-run home run for the Ducks in the top of the fifth and a solo home run in the top of the seventh put them back ahead by four, 10-6.
- In the bottom of the seventh inning, Miller and Eckelman both scored on wild pitches to put the Buckeyes within two, 10-8.
- A double to right field from Lipsey led off the bottom of the eighth inning and he advanced to third on a groundout from Ellis. Pettorini reached base after getting hit by a pitch. Lipsey scored on an Oregon error. Eckelman then reached after being hit by a pitch to put two runners on. A two-RBI single from Graveline sent Pettorini and Eckelman home for the go-ahead runs.
- The Ducks were retired in order in the top of the ninth, including two strikeouts from Hunter Shaw, to ice the 11-10 win for the Buckeyes.
- Graveline led the Buckeyes with three hits. Lipsey, Ellis and Pettorini each had two.
- Graveline and Simpson led the team in RBIs with two each.
- Gavin Kuzniewski fanned a career-high four in a 4.2-inning relief appearance.
- Shaw (2-3) earned the win. He struck out two and did not allow any runs or hits in 2.0 innings pitched.
Game Recap
- Oregon got on the board first, taking a 1-0 lead over Ohio State in the top of the second after a solo home run.
- With one out in the bottom of the second, Graveline walked. A single from Reggie Bussey advanced Graveline to third and put runners on the corners. Mineo picked up his first career hit, doubling to right field to plate Graveline and tie the score, 1-1. A double into left center from Simpson sent two runs across and gave the Buckeyes the lead, 3-1.
- In the bottom of the third, an RBI single from Graveline put Ohio State ahead by three, 4-1.
- A three-run home run for the Ducks in the top of the fourth inning tied the score, 4-4.
- In the top of the sixth, Oregon reclaimed the lead, 5-4, after scoring on a Buckeye error.
- Bussey singled to center field to lead off the bottom of the eighth inning for the Buckeyes. With one out, Simpson was hit by a pitch and Lipsey walked to load the bases. A sac fly from Ellis scored Bussey and tied the score, 5-5. Pettorini was next up at the plate and he came up big, sending one out of the park to drive in three runs and give the Buckeyes the lead, 8-5.
- Oregon got one more run across in the top of the ninth on a solo home run, but the Buckeyes closed out the game and earned the series win.
- Pettorini and Bussey led the Buckeyes in hits with two each.
- Pettorini had a team-high three RBIs and Simpson drove in two runs.
- Blaine Wynk (1-1) earned the win on the mound, tossing 3.1 innings. He fanned a career-high seven batters and allowed just one run on two hits.
- The Buckeyes are back at Bill Davis Stadium on Tuesday, April 1 to host West Virginia at 6:00 p.m.
