Ohio State sets it single-season home run record and hits seven total homers
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State softball team did what it's been doing all season long: hit home runs and scored runs. That combination led to an 11-6 win over Purdue Fort Wayne on Tuesday that was mixed with a bit of history.
The Buckeyes hit seven home runs – tied for the most in program history in a single game – and also broke the program's single-season home run record. Morgan Frye's blast in the second inning was Ohio State's 76th of the season, which broke the previous mark of 75 set in 2015. Ohio State would go on to hit two more in the game and have 78 heading into tomorrow's game versus Akron.
The win – Ohio State's eighth in a row – improved the Buckeyes' record to 26-6-1. Purdue Fort Wayne is now 5-16. Additionally, the win was the 200th career victory for head coach Kirin Kumar, who came to Ohio State this season having won 174 games over four seasons at Miami University.
How It Happened
- Purdue Fort Wayne started the game with four runs in the top of the first inning, scoring on a two-run homerun and two-run double, respectively.
- Though trailing, the Buckeyes wasted no time in responding. Four Ohio State players homered in the inning, including a two-run shot from Sami Bewick, solo shots by Kami Kortokrax and Jasmyn Burns and a three-run blast by Taylor Cruse. The barrage ended the inning with the Buckeyes in front, 7-4.
- In the second inning, Morgan Frye put the Buckeyes further in front and into the record books. Her two-run bomb over the right field wall was the team home run record breaker.
- Hadley Parisien added to that total in the third inning with a solo shot that put the Buckeyes in double digits. Kortokrax followed up with her second homer of the day that made the score 11-4. The home runs in the 3rd made for seven on the day, tying the game-high record that the Buckeyes set earlier this season against Cornell.
- Kassandra Gewecke started the game, but was relieved by Kennedy Kay in the 1st inning after Purdue Fort Wayne plated four runs. Kay would finish the game and go on to get the win, her seventh of the year. Her eight strikeouts were also a season-high, besting her six strikeouts in the win over UNCG.
Buckeye This and That
- Frye, this week's Big Ten Player of the Week, has homered in the last three games, and is hitting .444 on the year.
